does typhoid spread by touch - #28393
I am really worried about something that happened last week. I was visiting a friend who just got back from a trip and I didn’t know she was sick. She had typhoid and we were all hanging out, sharing food and drinks, you know, just having a good time. I didn't think much of it until I found out she was diagnosed with typhoid. I have been reading online and it says typhoid is caused by bacteria and can be pretty serious but does typhoid spread by touch? I keep thinking about how we were passing around snacks and touching utensils and all that. I’ve started feeling a bit nauseous which scares me. Like, does typhoid spread by touch if, say, I touched something she touched? I don't know, should I get tested now or just wait to see if I start feeling worse? I was with her for a solid few hours, and if it's contagious through touch, I’m really freaking out here! Should I be on the lookout for any specific symptoms?? Ugh, this is all so stressful! Does typhoid spread by touch?! I just want to be sure I’m taking the right steps to avoid getting sick. Any advice would really be helpful!

Doctors' responses
Typhoid fever, caused by the bacterium Salmonella typhi, primarily spreads through ingestion of contaminated food and water. It’s not typically spread by casual touch in the way a cold or flu might be. However, sharing food, drinks, or utensils with someone infected with typhoid could potentially spread the bacteria, especially if proper hygiene is not observed, like if someone’s hands are contaminated from inadequate handwashing after using the bathroom. So your concern makes sense, especially considering the shared snacks and utensils. Given your situation, it’s reasonable to be vigilant. Common symptoms of typhoid include prolonged fever, fatigue, headache, abdominal pain, and sometimes a rash. Nausea can be an early sign too. Since you’ve started feeling nauseous, albeit for other possible reasons like anxiety or unrelated causes, it’s wise to monitor your symptoms. If you start experiencing a sustained fever or other concerning symptoms, I’d recommend contacting a healthcare professional for advice, possibly to consider testing or preventive antibiotics, especially since early intervention can make a difference in outcomes. In the meantime, maintaining good hygiene, particularly handwashing, can help mitigate risk. If you feel uncertain or symptoms escalate, don’t delay in seeking professional medical review.
