Doctors' responses

Widespread body pain, such as what you’ve described in your mother, could have several underlying causes. One common possibility is fibromyalgia, which is characterized by chronic, widespread pain and tenderness to touch, fatigue, and cognitive disturbances. While the exact cause isn’t fully known, it can be triggered by factors like infections, physical or emotional trauma, or stress. It’s also worth considering other conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, although these often come with additional symptoms like joint swelling or rashes, respectively. Another potential cause might be chronic myofascial pain syndrome, which involves localized muscle pain and can become widespread over time. To reach a clearer diagnosis, it is essential for your mother to undergo a thorough clinical examination by a healthcare professional. This may include reviewing her complete medical history, conducting blood tests to rule out conditions like autoimmune diseases or vitamin deficiencies, and possibly imaging studies or referral to a specialist. As for management, if fibromyalgia or a similar chronic pain condition is diagnosed, options typically include a combination of medications such as low-dose antidepressants or anticonvulsants, physical therapy to improve mobility and strength, and cognitive behavioral therapy to help with pain management strategies. Encourage her to maintain a regular but gentle exercise routine, like swimming or walking, as well as a balanced diet, and ensure adequate sleep which can significantly improve symptoms. It’s important for her to avoid overexertion and manage stress through relaxation techniques or counseling if needed. If her pain is acute or severely limits her daily function, prompt medical evaluation is necessary to exclude any serious or treatable underlying conditions.
