Doctors’ responses

Dandruff is often caused by an overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus called Malassezia, which thrives on oils on the scalp. To tackle dandruff effectively and achieve a clearer scalp, it helps to focus on reducing this fungal growth and balancing oil production. Consider using an anti-dandruff shampoo that contains active ingredients like ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, zinc pyrithione, or salicylic acid. These components help in reducing fungal growth and easing flaking and itching. Use the shampoo 2-3 times a week, lathering well and leaving it on your hair for about 5 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. For regular days, supplement with a mild, non-drying shampoo.

Additionally, managing stress through relaxation techniques or physical activity can also improve your scalp health, as stress is known to aggravate dandruff. Try maintaining a balanced diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, and vitamins B and E, which can support overall scalp health. If you’re dealing with forehead acne or bumps that you suspect are linked to dandruff, keeping your forehead clean and avoiding touching your face with your hands may help. Use a gentle, non-comedogenic facial cleanser twice daily to clear excess oil and dirt.

If dandruff or associated symptoms persist despite these corrections, it might be beneficial to see a dermatologist. They can prescribe stronger treatments or help rule out other conditions that mimic dandruff, like psoriasis or other seborrheic dermatitis. Any sudden or severe symptoms, such as intense itching accompanied by hair loss or a rash, warrant prompt medical attention to ensure there’s no underlying serious condition.
