Doctors’ responses

Gynecomastia, commonly referred to as “man boobs,” is a condition where there is an increase in the size of breast tissue in males. It can be due to hormonal imbalances, medications, or underlying health issues such as liver disease or obesity. It is typically not dangerous, but persistent pain and significant enlargement can cause discomfort or self-consciousness. While gynecomastia itself does not increase the risk of breast cancer, it can cause psychological distress, so it’s important to address your concerns. Pain might be a sign of inflammation or other complications, and letting it be checked out is a good idea. A thorough clinical examination and perhaps imaging may be necessary to rule out other conditions. If there’s an underlying hormonal imbalance or health issue, treating that can often reduce breast size. Sometimes, gynecomastia is idiopathic, meaning there is no identifiable cause, and in those cases, lifestyle modifications like managing body weight through diet and exercise may help. If non-surgical approaches don’t work and the size remains a social or physical issue, surgical options like reduction mammoplasty might be considered. To ensure your treatment pathway is successful, I recommend seeing a doctor to assess the cause and consider any non-invasive approaches first. Self-medicating with supplements or over-the-counter remedies is not advised, as they can sometimes do more harm than good. It’s crucial to have a tailored plan based on your overall health status and specific condition, so please consult with a healthcare provider for a personalized evaluation.
