Doctors’ responses

A delayed period can be caused by a variety of factors, even if you haven’t had intercourse. Stress is one of the most common reasons for menstrual irregularities, and it seems like you’ve been under some emotional strain due to the fights with your boyfriend. Stress can affect your hormone balance, particularly cortisol, which in turn can disrupt your menstrual cycle. Besides stress, other factors such as significant weight changes, intense exercise, or changes in diet can impact your cycle. Hormonal imbalances or conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) might also be a cause. Also, it’s not uncommon for cycles to vary occasionally without any major underlying issue.

In terms of what to do next, consider tracking your symptoms and stress levels. It might be beneficial to address the stress through techniques like mindfulness, well-being apps, or pursuing hobbies that help you relax. Diet and exercise adjustments can promote regular cycles, like maintaining a balanced diet with enough nutrients and engaging in moderate activity instead of excessive exercise. If your periods remain irregular or you notice additional concerning symptoms like severe pain, unexpected weight changes, or abnormal hair growth, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider. They may recommend tests to evaluate your hormonal health or assess for other gynecological issues. Also, it might just be that this cycle is uniquely affected – keep an eye on the next cycle and consider speaking to a medical professional if you experience further delays.
