eye flu drops - #12819

Simran

I am really confused and worried about these "eye flu drops." I mean, I thought eye flu was just some temporary irritation, right? But then a week ago, I woke up with my eyes all swollen and red, couldn’t even open them properly. I went to the doc and he prescribed these eye flu drops. At first, I was kinda skeptical like, are eye flu drops even a thing? The doctor said they could help with the viral infection going around. I’ve been using them for about 4 days now, and at first, my eyes seemed to be getting better, but now, they’re super itchy and I feel like I’m seeing things blurry! Is that normal? Can eye flu drops actually cause side effects like this, or am I just being paranoid? Plus, I read something about how some people are allergic to eye flu drops? How do you even know?! I really need to understand if these drops are working because I can't handle the thought of walking around looking like I got punched in the face for longer. Has anyone else dealt with this? Do eye flu drops actually work, or should I be looking into something else for relief? Thanks in advance for any input!

Doctors’ responses

Eye flu drops are typically prescribed to manage symptoms related to viral conjunctivitis, which is often referred to as “eye flu.” This condition is usually caused by adenoviruses and is quite contagious. The drops you’re using likely contain antiviral medication or anti-inflammatory agents designed to reduce swelling, redness, and discomfort. However, depending on their formulation, these drops can sometimes cause side effects like itchiness or blurry vision, which you’re experiencing. It can take a few days for symptoms to improve significantly with these medications, but if you notice side effects persisting or worsening, it’s crucial to talk to your doctor about it. Blurred vision can occur as a side effect, either from the medication itself or its preservatives, so if this continues or worsens, a follow-up evaluation might be necessary. It’s not uncommon for some individuals to have allergic reactions to the compounds in eye drops, which could be what’s contributing to the itchiness. If you suspect an allergy, your doctor might switch you to a different formulation. It can be tricky to differentiate an allergic reaction from a side effect, but abrupt onset of intensely itchy, red, or swollen eyes could hint at an allergy. To address your concerns effectively, check with your healthcare provider to ensure the drops are suitable for you and consider discussing alternative treatments if needed. Meanwhile, maintaining proper eye hygiene, like avoiding touching your eyes and frequently washing your hands, is crucial to prevent the spread or worsening of the infection. If symptoms persist despite the treatment, or if you see no improvement, further medical evaluation will be prudent to rule out other conditions or complications.
