How to induce period after taking emergency pill - #12962
Hello, I need urgent advice for my girlfriend (teen). Her last normal period was 21 Aug. She had protected sex on 2 Sep and took Unwanted-72 (levonorgestrel) on 4 Sep. She had withdrawal bleeding 9–12 Sep. Since then she has not had a regular period. We did urine pregnancy tests on 29 Sep, 8 Oct, and 17 Oct (all negative). She has occasional mild lower-abdominal cramps and light spotting but no full period. Her weight is 40–45 kg. Please advise: (1) whether pregnancy is fully excluded and (2) if medical treatment is needed now to induce a period, and what you would prescribe and how to take it. She needs a clear e-prescription and instructions for side effects and when to seek emergency help

Hello,
🛑1) Pregnancy is almost certainly excluded. Nothing to worry about. 2) periods is delayed due to the pill since it disturbed the hormonal cycle Its a common issue, doesn’t mean anything serious
Her actual cycle may take 1–2 months to regulate, especially at her age and low body weight (40–45 kg), which can affect hormone balance.
If you want to induce periods, she can take ; Tab. Norethisterone 5 mg – Take one tablet twice daily for 5 days
Expect bleeding within 7 days of stopping medication
🛑Or else she can wait if she is not overly anxious or distressed about the delay. Periods often return within 6–8 weeks after taking emergency contraception, especially if withdrawal bleeding already occurred. Waiting allows her body to reset naturally without medication.
I trust this helps Thank you
Pregnancy is ruled out. Period delay is due to temporary hormonal imbalance from the emergency pill.
After emergency contraception, many girls and women experience: Temporary hormonal imbalance (from high-dose levonorgestrel) Anovulation (no egg released that cycle) Stress-related delay or low body weight effect (her weight 40–45 kg makes cycle more sensitive) The cycle usually resets within 4 – 8 weeks, but sometimes needs mild hormonal help.
Hello Navnil, thank you for sharing your concern. I understand this might be worrisome, but no need to worry.
First of all, your girlfriend is not pregnant, as all these UPTs are negative. Her periods can get disturbed because of the Unwanted-72 that she took. Still, if you want to clear your doubts, get an Ultrasound of Abdomen + Pelvis done. It’ll completely exclude pregnant and your worry too.
No medical treatment is needed now to get her periods. You can wait and watch, let her menstrual cycle reset with time. Still, if she doesn’t get her periods for the next 1 month, in any form, then start this medicine, (But start after another Urine Pregnancy Test negative) - Tab. Norethisterone 5mg twice a day × 5 days. She’ll get her periods a few days after the last dose. No major side effects as such, except for mild nausea, vomiting. Seek a Gynecologist’s help if any UPT comes +ve / Ultrasound shows pregnancy / periods don’t come after giving her Norethisterone / this issue continues, as she would need hormonal evaluation then.
Feel free to reach out again.

Hello dear See as per clinical evaluation,it seems periods are missing due to ocd medication. So I assure you that the periods will remain normal after completion of current cycle. So as per my clinical experience you must wait for max 1 week and then consult gynaecologist in person for better clarity There could be requirement of medication or hormonal therapy to induce periods. Also,i confirm you that during this period there will no pregnancy Regards
Hello Navnil As per your history the disturbance in period is due to hormonal pill . So nothing to worry normal period will begin after completing this cycle. As you ask about pregnancy there is no pregnancy so nothing to worry about that .
Thank you
Hi Navnil On the basis of your given presenting complaints
Assessment: • Pregnancy extremely unlikely (multiple negative UPT + withdrawal bleeding after ECP) • Likely secondary amenorrhea due to hormonal imbalance
Plan of treatment - Tab Medroxyprogesterone 10 mg 1 tablet at night × 5–7 days it will Induce withdrawal bleeding
Instructions: • Bleeding should start within 3–7 days after finishing Medroxyprogesterone • Take at the same time each day • Maintain hydration
Emergency Advice: Seek immediate help for severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, fever, vomiting, or positive pregnancy test
Hi Dear Navnil, I can understand your concern Kindly donot panic Kindly do a USG Abdomen + Pelvis scan OCPS can cause altered menstruation Kindly visit a nearby Gynecologist for the same Donot take any more Over the counter drugs Take care
Pregnancy is very unlikely since she had timely emergency contraception, withdrawal bleeding, and repeated negative tests. The delayed period is most likely due to temporary hormonal imbalance from Unwanted-72. Please consult a gynecologist for evaluation and, if needed, safe prescription of medicines to induce her period after ruling out other causes.
Given the negative pregnancy tests on multiple occasions, it seems that pregnancy can be reasonably excluded, especially since they’re taken well after the expected period of implantation. Emergency contraception like Unwanted-72 can affect menstrual cycles by delaying ovulation or altering the endometrium, leading to changes in the timing and nature of the next period. The withdrawal bleeding she experienced from 9-12 Sep is known to occur after taking levonorgestrel, which might cause some disruption in the regular cycle. The occasional cramps and spotting could be due to hormonal fluctuations from the emergency contraceptive use. With her weight on the lower end, there can also be additional sensitivity to such medications, potentially impacting her cycle further.
Regarding inducing a period, it may not be medically necessary to intervene at this early stage unless there are additional concerning symptoms. In many cases, the menstrual cycle can take some time to normalize after emergency contraception. Ensuring she maintains a healthy diet and stress levels can be supportive. If a menstrual period hasn’t resumed in the coming weeks and irregularities continue, it might be worthwhile to consult a gynecologist before starting any medication. Medications like oral progesterone can be prescribed to induce a period, but these should be guided by a healthcare professional who can evaluate her specific health context. It’s important not to self-prescribe, as inappropriate use could cause further disruptions. Side effects of such medications include nausea, headache, and breast tenderness, and any severe pain, excessive bleeding, or other acute symptoms should prompt immediate medical attention. In summary, continue monitoring her symptoms, and consult a healthcare provider if her cycle doesn’t regularize or if she develops any concerning symptoms.
Hello Pregnancy is excluded. Hormonal imbalance due to pill is the reason for delayed mensus. Get these tests done for better evaluation. 1. Thyroid profile 2. Ultrasound transvaginal
No medicines needed before that Review with the reports. Take care
1. Since she took Unwanted-72 within 12 hours, pregnancy is fully ruled out three negative tests confirm it.
2. Emergency pills can disturb hormones and delay the next period by 2–6 weeks this is common and not harmful.
3. Encourage balanced diet, hydration, and stress control, as stress and low body weight (40–45 kg) can further delay menses.
4. If no period even after 6–8 weeks from September, a short 5-day course of medroxyprogesterone acetate (Provera 10 mg daily) can be prescribed by a gynecologist to induce bleeding safely.
5. Avoid taking any hormone pills on your own. If irregularity continues after withdrawal bleeding, do thyroid and prolactin tests to rule out hormonal imbalance.
