kidney removal surgery scar - #13211

Kiaan

I am really worried about my healing after having kidney removal surgery a few weeks ago. The scar from the surgery is just so much bigger than I expected, and it kinda makes me feel self-conscious. I read that scars can vary from person to person, but this kidney removal surgery scar is pretty red and raised; I didn't see many pictures before my surgery, like, I thought it would be just a small line or something, but this is definitly not what I imagined. I also got some strange pulling sensations around the area, which worries me too. Is the size of the kidney removal surgery scar normal?? And how long does it usually take for them to fade? Some people mentioned creams to help or like silicone sheets, but do those really work? I want to know if all of this is normal or if I should be worried about how my kidney removal surgery scar looks right now. Plus, what’s the best way to care for it? I’m feeling a little confused and just would really appreciate any advice or experiences you might have had with your own kidney removal surgery scars!

Doctors’ responses

The size and appearance of a kidney removal surgery scar can indeed vary, and feeling self-conscious about it is not uncommon. These scars are often larger than what some patients anticipate, especially if you’ve undergone an open nephrectomy, as opposed to a laparoscopic one. Open surgeries can result in longer, more pronounced scars, whereas laparoscopic procedures tend to leave smaller ones due to their less invasive nature. Your concern about the scar being red and raised is understandable — it’s part of the normal healing process. Scars typically go through different stages and can take several months to a couple of years to fully mature and fade. Initially, they might be quite noticeable in color and texture, but over time they should become less prominent.

Those pulling sensations you’re experiencing are not unusual either. As scar tissue is forming, you might feel tightness or pulling. This sensation should gradually improve as the tissue settles down, but if it gets worse or becomes painful, it’s best to have it checked out by your healthcare provider to rule out complications such as infections or hernias. Regarding treatment options like creams or silicone sheets, they have shown varying levels of effectiveness. Silicone sheets are generally well-regarded for helping scars mature more smoothly. They could potentially minimize redness and improve texture over time, but they require consistent use over a period of weeks to months. Moisturizing creams or gels containing ingredients like vitamin E, or hyaluronic acid can aid in keeping the skin hydrated and may support healing.

Always ensure that the scar is clean and protected from excessive sun exposure, which can worsen its appearance. A high SPF sunscreen applied regularly can help protect the area. If you’re considering silicone products or other topical treatments, it’s wise to consult with your doctor to ensure they are appropriate for your skin and healing process. They can also provide you with more personalized suggestions based on the specifics of your case. If you observe signs like increased redness, warmth, swelling, or discharge from the scar, these could indicate an infection and would require prompt medical attention. Overall, while it’s important to monitor your scar, remember that some level of visibility is normal, and over time, it should become a more subtle mark of your recovery.
