how long can a person live with one kidney - #14741

Ayush

I am really worried about my dad. He’s had some health issues lately, and we found out that he only has one kidney. The doctors told us that it’s functioning okay, but I keep thinking about how long can a person live with one kidney? He’s 68, so I can’t help but feel anxious about his overall health, like, will his body keep functioning without any issues? I’ve read about people living normal lives with just one kidney, but that’s theoretical, right? My uncle said he knew someone who was just fine for years, but does that mean it’s always the case? And are there any lifestyle changes he needs to make? Like should he avoid certain foods or activities? If someone has one kidney, does it change their lifespan in any way or is it really just about how well that kidney works? I guess I’m just looking for some reassurance or experiences from other people, you know? I want to understand more about how long can a person live with one kidney because it’s been really hard to see my dad go through this and I'm just trying to be supportive while also being freaking out a bit.

Doctors’ responses

Having just one kidney is not unusual, and many people live a normal lifespan with one fully functioning kidney. The remaining kidney usually takes on the workload of the missing one, often enlarging slightly to cope with increased demand. What’s important is the kidney’s function rather than the mere presence of both. If your dad’s doctors have confirmed that his single kidney is functioning properly, that’s a positive sign. Generally, having one kidney doesn’t typically reduce life expectancy if that kidney stays healthy. However, it’s important for your dad to maintain his kidney health through several lifestyle measures. For starters, he should aim to stay hydrated, drinking adequate water throughout the day. A balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains while limiting sodium, refined sugars and excessive protein can be beneficial. Regular check-ups and monitoring of blood pressure and blood sugar levels are essential since these factors are key contributors to kidney health. He should also try to avoid over-the-counter medications known to affect kidneys, like NSAIDs, unless recommended by his healthcare provider. Encouraging a regular routine of moderate physical activity can also support his overall health, helping to manage weight and decrease BP. As for lifespan considerations, the risk really lies with how well he manages existing health conditions and doesn’t directly hinge on the number of kidneys. If the kidney function remains stable over time, and there’s no progression of any other medical conditions, his condition may not affect his lifespan significantly. Being informed and proactive about living with one kidney can be very supportive for both you and your dad. However, if you notice any new symptoms or have concerns about changes in his health, it’s best to consult promptly with a healthcare professional to ensure his health is closely monitored.
