treatment for blood clot in eye - #15272

Pihu

I am really worried because last week I went to the eye doctor, and he told me I have a blood clot in my eye. I guess it started a few months ago, but I thought it was just allergies or something. I noticed my vision was getting blurry and there were these weird floaters that wouldn’t go away. At first, I thought maybe it was just old age catching up to me or maybe I was just tired. But then my vision got worse, and my doc did some tests, and boom, blood clot in eye!! Now I’ve read a bit online about treatment for blood clot in eye but there seems to be so much information, it’s confusing! Like, do I need any special medications or what kind of treatments are actually available? They mentioned something about laser treatment for blood clot in eye or maybe injections. Has anyone tried those? Do they actually work?! I really don't want to lose my sight over this, and I’m feeling kinda lost. How long does it take for treatment for blood clot in eye to show results? Also, is there something I should be doing or not doing in the meantime? My follow-up appointment isn’t for another two weeks, and that feels like forever.

Doctors’ responses

When dealing with a blood clot in the eye, normally referred to as retinal vein occlusion, several treatment options can be considered, based on the severity and specific location of the clot. In many cases, doctors might recommend medications that help decrease swelling and improve blood flow to the retina, such as anti-VEGF injections directly into the eye. These injections target vascular endothelial growth factor, which is involved in the formation of new blood vessels and can help decrease swelling and prevent vision loss. These treatments can be quite effective, but typically require a series of injections over time to maintain their benefits.

Laser treatment is another option sometimes used, especially if there is significant swelling or leakage of fluid. This treatment helps seal off leaking blood vessels and prevent further damage. It’s often more applicable for central retinal vein occlusions or to address underlying disease processes like macular edema. The effectiveness largely depends on individual case specifics. Results can vary, but some people notice improvements after just a few weeks, while others may require several sessions before seeing a significant change. In between treatments, managing blood pressure and blood sugar levels, if applicable is essential, as these can have direct impacts on recovery and prevention of further eye damage. Avoiding smoking and eating a healthy diet can also contribute to better overall results.

During the waiting period for your follow-up, ensure you adhere to your doctor’s specific recommendations. If any worsening of symptoms, such as increased pain or suddenly decreased vision, occur before the appointment, seeking medical advice promptly would be prudent. While waiting periods can seem prolonged, staying on top of any symptoms or discomfort is paramount in avoiding complications. Be cautious with activities that might strain your eyes and follow up immediately if any instructions or medical concerns arise. The main goal is to stop further deterioration and stabilize your current vision status.
