110/68 blood pressure - #16277

Ayaan

I am feeling a bit confused and worried about my blood pressure, which I recently checked and it was 110/68 blood pressure. On one hand, I read that 110/68 blood pressure is considered normal, but I can't help but wonder if it's too low for me. I'm a 30-year-old woman, fairly active, but lately, I’ve been feeling a bit dizzy at times and my energy levels have been unpredictable. When I exercise, I sometimes feel lightheaded but then it passes quickly. I've been trying to keep my diet clean, mostly whole foods, but I've also been stressed a lot with work and life stuff. Last week, during a routine check-up, the doctor noted my 110/68 blood pressure and mentioned it's nothing to be alarmed about. However, I can't shake off this nagging feeling that maybe I should be more concerned about this reading? I mean, like, was that 110/68 blood pressure actually fine or could it indicate something else going on? Have any of you ever had blood pressure readings that felt unusual for you? What should I be looking out for here?

Doctors' responses

A blood pressure reading of 110/68 is generally considered within the normal range and especially for someone active like you, it’s often regarded as ideal. However, it’s understandable that you’re concerned, particularly since you’re experiencing symptoms like dizziness and unpredictable energy levels. These symptoms can sometimes be related to blood pressure, but they’re not solely dictated by it. Given your description of an active lifestyle and some stress, it’s possible that dehydration or fluctuations in blood sugar might also contribute to these feelings. When dehydrated, your body might struggle to maintain optimal blood pressure, potentially leading to dizziness. Make sure you’re maintaining good hydration, especially before and after exercise.

In terms of monitoring, pay attention to when your dizziness occurs—note if it happens more when standing up quickly, as this could indicate postural hypotension, in which case, more gradual changes in posture can help. Considering you’ve been experiencing stress, it’s crucial to incorporate stress management techniques like mindfulness or yoga, which not only help with stress but may also stabilize energy levels. If symptoms like dizziness persist or worsen or if you notice any new symptoms like chest pain or an irregular heartbeat, it’s advisable to follow up with your doctor. They can reassess your situation to determine if further tests, such as blood work or an ECG, are necessary. Self-monitor your blood pressure at different times of the day to see if there are patterns, and bring these recordings to your doctor. This information can be important in assessing if your symptoms are linked to blood pressure variations.
