curd rice in loose motion - #16501

Siddharth

I am feeling super worried as my stomach has been acting up pretty bad for the last few days. It all started after I ate curd rice at a friend's place, like I didn't think anything of it, you know? I always thought curd rice was a safe choice! But now, after having it, I’ve been dealing with loose motion. Like, I go to the bathroom way too often, and it feels awful. I've tried to adjust my diet, staying hydrated and all, but I can't shake this off. I’m starting to wonder if it was the curd rice that did this. Can curd rice in loose motion just be a coincidence? Or maybe I’m allergic or something? I don't have a history of food intolerance or anything wild like that, but this whole experience has been quite the scare! A friend suggested that because curd rice is supposed to be cooling and soothing, it should help rather than hurt, but it’s making me second-guess everything. Should I avoid curd rice in the future, even after I hopefully get better? I just can’t help but think if there’s something with the way it was prepared or if it combined badly with something else I ate. Any thoughts?

Doctors’ responses

Curd rice is generally considered a soothing and mild dish, often being a go-to choice when dealing with upset stomachs because of its cooling properties. However, if you’ve experienced loose motions after eating it, a few things could be at play. First, it’s important to consider food safety: the curd or rice might have been past its prime or improperly stored, leading to bacterial contamination, which can indeed cause diarrhea. You might want to check with your friend if others who ate the same meal had any similar issues, as it could help trace the source. That said, an allergy or intolerance to curd rice is less likely if you haven’t had issues with dairy or rice products before.

On the issue of other contributing factors, such as stress, viral infections, or consuming other irritating foods, they might already be impacting your digestion, with curd rice being merely coincidental. Monitoring any other foods you consume alongside might also help pinpoint any triggers. As for now, continue with what you’re doing: staying hydrated is crucial to prevent dehydration; you might consider oral rehydration solutions if trips to the bathroom remain frequent.

If the symptoms persist beyond a few days or you notice other concerning signs—severe abdominal pain, dehydration, or blood in stools—it’d be wise to seek medical consultation. There might be a need for further evaluation to rule out anything more serious or start specific treatment. And once recovered, unless you’ve learned that your symptoms were directly tied to curd rice, there’s no inherent reason to avoid it in the future. Simply ensuring careful food handling and being mindful of any concurrent dietary choices can usually ensure you remain symptom-free.
