How to know if metformin will help me recover from insulin sensitivity issues after psychiatric medication?

Pawan

Im tired of asking questions. I don't know what to ask. Just make me assured as stone how can you say that I'll recover after metformin use. I used metformin 40 tablets over 7 months. All blood tests are normal right now. Please make me relaxed by full confirmation. Im 28. I was on psychiatry meds 6 months before metformin use for 3 years by doctor. Bupropion etizolam divalproex pregabalin-nt amisulpride lowest effective dose. Did i do right by taking metformin, would doctor have done the same because i felt insulin sensitivity decreased after psychiatry meds. I also felt aged. So i thought metformin will cure ageing of me somewhat. Tell me what sources you can use to tell me I'll recover fully back to earlier state. Tell me everything I am not able to ask by lack of knowledge. Also please only reply if you are qualified in this.

Dr. Bharat Joshi
I’m a periodontist and academician with a strong clinical and teaching background. Over the last 4 years and 8 months, I’ve been actively involved in dental education, guiding students at multiple levels including dental hygienist, BDS, and MDS programs. Currently, I serve as a Reader at MMCDSR in Ambala, Haryana—a role that allows me to merge my academic passion with hands-on experience. Clinically, I’ve been practicing dentistry for the past 12 years. From routine procedures like scaling and root planing to more advanced cases involving grafts, biopsies, and implant surgeries. Honestly, I still find joy in doing a simple RCT when it’s needed. It’s not just about the procedure but making sure the patient feels comfortable and safe. Academically, I have 26 research publications to my credit. I’m on the editorial boards of the Archives of Dental Research and Journal of Dental Research and Oral Health, and I’ve spent a lot of time reviewing manuscripts—from case reports to meta-analyses and even book reviews. I was honored to receive the “Best Editor” award by Innovative Publications, and Athena Publications recognized me as an “excellent reviewer,” which honestly came as a bit of a surprise! In 2025, I had the opportunity to present a guest lecture in Italy on traumatic oral lesions. Sharing my work and learning from peers globally has been incredibly fulfilling. Outside academics and clinics, I’ve also worked in the pharmaceutical sector as a Drug Safety Associate for about 3 years, focusing on pharmacovigilance. That role really sharpened my attention to detail and deepened my understanding of drug interactions and adverse effects. My goal is to keep learning, and give every patient and student my absolute best.

Understanding whether metformin will help with insulin sensitivity issues that arose after using psychiatric medications involves a few critical factors. First, metformin is widely recognized for improving insulin sensitivity and is often prescribed for conditions characterized by insulin resistance, like type 2 diabetes or those with risk of developing it. Its benefits also extend to some off-label uses, including treating conditions where insulin sensitivity is a concern. Psychiatric medications, especially atypical antipsychotics, are known to affect metabolic processes, potentially leading to insulin resistance and weight changes. However, whether metformin would have been the choice of your doctor depends on the specific circumstances and their understanding of your overall health profile. It’s encouraging that your recent blood tests are normal, suggesting your body’s glucose and metabolic control may not be significantly impaired at this point.

While metformin does have some evidence supporting minor benefits in the context of aging and other metabolic aspects, its efficacy can vary widely among individuals. It should not be solely relied upon for ‘curing’ perceived premature aging. Lifestyle interventions such as regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and weight management play a substantial role in enhancing metabolic health and mitigating aging effects. There aren’t absolute guarantees in medicine, and while metformin may assist in managing insulin sensitivity, recovery to your ‘earlier state’ involves multiple factors, including continuous monitoring of your health, lifestyle choices, and potentially involving additional treatments or lifestyle changes.

If you’re concerned about your use of metformin or any lingering health effects, consulting with a healthcare professional, preferably an endocrinologist or your primary care physician, is a good step. They can comprehensively assess whether continued use of metformin is ideal for your situation, taking into account blood tests, personal health history, and current symptoms. While it’s clear you’re seeking reassurance, medicine often demands continued observation and sometimes a combined therapeutic approach to achieve optimal health outcomes. So, be proactive about discussing your health status routinely with a qualified professional who can tailor advice to your situation.
