eyes flew - #16838

Vanya

I am feeling really concerned about something that happened to me last week. I was at work, just normal day, but then suddenly my eyes flew open like I was shocked or somethin. It was so weird! One moment I was staring at my computer, and the next, my eyes flew open like there was an explosion or something. I kinda brushed it off till a couple days later when I felt a sharp pain behind my left eye. It didn’t go away. Then, I noticed my vision seemed off too? Like, everything felt blurry for a minute, then it got better. But then again, my eyes keep having these moments where they just fly open unexpectedly. I’ve tried to focus, but the sharp pain makes it hard, and I can’t help but worry about what’s going on. I’m not really sure if this is something I should be more freaked out about or if it's just some strange temporary thing. Anyone got any clues about why my eyes would just fly open like that and what might be causing this pain? I haven’t gone to the eye doctor yet, but now I think I probably should.

Doctors’ responses

What you’re describing sounds unsettling, and there are definitely a few things to consider in terms of what’s happening. The abrupt sensation of your eyes flying open might be related to a transient involuntary response, possibly triggered by an external stimulus or an underlying neurological issue. The sharp pain behind your left eye and temporary vision changes could both be related to several conditions. A common cause of such symptoms might be ocular migraine, where visual disturbances and headaches are typical. However, other possibilities like optic neuritis, which is inflammation of the optic nerve, could lead to pain and visual symptoms as well. Given that you also have blurry vision and the consistent sharp pain, it’s essential to see an ophthalmologist or optometrist for a comprehensive eye examination. They will consider your symptoms, assess your vision, and potentially run tests like an eye pressure check or imaging studies if needed. Don’t delay this visit, especially because changes in vision and persistent pain should be thoroughly investigated to prevent any long-term issues. Alongside the eye concerns, if you experience any other symptoms like weakness, numbness, or severe headache, it’s critical to seek immediate medical advice as these could be indicative of more serious conditions like a neurological event. While awaiting your appointment, try to note any additional details about when these episodes happen, as this can help in forming an accurate diagnosis. It’s unlikely this is a temporary thing that should be ignored, especially since it’s recurring.
