loose motion and weakness - #21263

Fatima

I am having this issue that's really starting to freak me out. For the past week, I've been dealing with loose motion and weakness, and honestly, I don’t know what to think. It started right after I tried that new restaurant everyone was raving about. Thought I'd treat myself, but then boom! The next day, loose motion hit me hard. I was running to the bathroom like every hour and felt sooo drained afterward. Weakness set in pretty quickly, I mean, it feels like I haven’t eaten in ages even tho I try to stay hydrated. Checked my weight and I've lost a few pounds too, which isn’t good. I saw my regular doc, but she kept saying it could just be a viral thing, which is really frustrating to hear. What do you all think? Is loose motion and weakness something that can just go away on its own or should I be doing more? I tried some OTC meds for the loose motion but I’m still feeling weak, like can’t even stand up for too long without feeling wobbly. Should I worry and go back for more tests or just give it time? This is taking a toll on my life and I feel clueless. Anyone else dealt with loose motion and weakness for that long? What did you do?

Doctors' responses

Loose motion and weakness can indeed be unsettling, especially when they’re persistent over several days. Given that this started after dining out, one possibility could be bacterial or viral gastroenteritis, sometimes called a stomach bug. This often resolves on its own within a week, but the fact that your symptoms are continuing and you’re experiencing significant weakness means it might be time to look closer. Its key to maintain hydration, as ongoing diarrhea can lead to dehydration, which also contributes to feeling weak. Oral rehydration solutions can be particularly helpful because they replace not only water but also important electrolytes lost during loose motions. You’ve done the right thing by temporarily using over-the-counter medications, but if diarrhea persists beyond a week, or symptoms worsen, further evaluation may be necessary. At this point, I’d recommend seeking another consultation with your healthcare provider. They might want to perform some tests such as stool analysis to rule out infections that would need different treatment, like antibiotics. It’s also worth considering if your recent meals included any unusually spicy or rich foods which can sometimes disrupt digestion. Meanwhile, try soft foods that are easy on the stomach such as rice, bananas, applesauce, and toast. But remember, if you notice additional symptoms like high fever, severe abdominal pain, or if you continue to feel very weak and cannot maintain hydration, it’s important to seek medical attention promptly as these could indicate more serious conditions requiring intervention. Your weight loss, though concerning, can occur due to loss of water weight in the short term but shouldn’t be ignored if it continues. Therefore, balancing waiting a little while longer with being proactive about more investigation is best, depending on how your symptoms develop. Take care to monitor how you’re feeling, and don’t hesitate to return for more specific tests, like maybe even an endoscopy if recommended, depending on how things progress.
