which medicine is best for viral fever - #21264

Myra

I am feeling pretty lost here and hope someone can help me. A few days ago, I came down with what I thought was just a simple cold, but now it's got me feeling like I've been hit by a truck. I’ve had this high fever, chills, and I can't shake off the body aches. It feels like it just keeps getting worse. I went to the doctor and they said it’s viral fever but didn’t really give me much other than some advice to take rest and drink fluids. That kinda left me wondering, which medicine is best for viral fever? I've looked around and see a lot of options, like paracetamol for reducing fever, but is that enough? Should I be taking anything else for the body pain or is there like a specific protocol or certain over-the-counter meds that might help? I read somewhere that antibiotics won’t do anything since it’s viral, so I don’t want to waste my time or money on those. Just really feeling confused and frustrated. How do I know which medicine is best for viral fever? Can anyone share what worked for them or what I should be looking for in terms of treatment? Thanks!

When it comes to managing viral fever, the mainstay of treatment indeed is symptomatic relief, given that it’s caused by viruses and not bacteria, so antibiotics are unhelpful here. Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is generally the go-to over-the-counter medicine for reducing fever and relieving body aches. It’s quite effective when taken as directed; be sure to follow dosing guidelines closely on the package or as advised by your healthcare provider. Ibuprofen can also be considered for lowering fever and easing pain, but not both at the same time as paracetamol unless recommended by a doctor, since there isn’t known benefit from combining them and doing so could lead to issues like overdose or liver problems.

In addition to medication, remain hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids such as water, herbal teas, or even sipping on broths. This helps manage fever and prevents dehydration. Rest is crucial too as it allows your immune system to better fight off the virus. Using a cool, damp cloth on your forehead could help soothe high fever symptoms, and dressing in light, breathable clothing may make you more comfortable. Keep an eye out for any overcrowding symptoms that may indicate something more serious, such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, or confusion. In such cases, it’s important to seek immediate medical attention. If you’ve been following these steps, and there’s little to no improvement, or worsening symptoms indicate it’s wise to re-visit your doctor to reassess the situation.
