is hair oil good for hair - #23287

Aisha

I am really confused about this whole hair oil situation. Since forever, I’ve heard that using hair oil is good for hair, but I don't really know if that’s true? Like just last week I tried this coconut oil after seeing a YouTube video saying coconut oil is amazing for hair health, but now my hair feels super greasy and heavy. Also, I have this dry scalp problem, so I thought maybe oil would help, ya know? But after using the oil, my scalp turned kinda itchy, and I’m wondering if is hair oil good for hair after all? I read somewhere that oil can weigh down fine hair and mine is definitely on the finer side. My friend swears by argan oil saying is hair oil good for hair, especially when it’s cold out! But then, that makes me think—does it really depend on the type of oil? I just want to know if there's a right way to use it or if it’s just going to be another product that makes my hair worse. Anyone else feels like is hair oil good for hair is such a confusing topic? Would love to get some insights or tips from you guys!

The confusion around hair oil is pretty common, especially with so much information out there. Generally, hair oil can indeed be beneficial for many people, but its effects can vary based on hair type, scalp condition, and the type of oil used. Coconut oil, for instance, is often praised for its ability to penetrate the hair shaft and reduce protein loss, but it can be too heavy for fine hair, leading to that greasy feeling you described. If your hair is on the finer side, you might want to use coconut oil sparingly or consider lighter oils, like argan oil, which your friend mentioned. Argan oil is known for being rich in nutrients and not weighing hair down as much, which makes it more suitable for fine hair and also helpful in dry or cold weather. Regarding your dry scalp and itchiness, sometimes oils can help by providing a moisture barrier, but they can also trap sweat or oils from the scalp, exacerbating itchiness. Ensure you’re not using too much oil and washing it out properly with a good cleanser. For dry scalp specifically, it’s worth experimenting with oils like tea tree oil, which can have antimicrobial properties, but use it diluted in a carrier oil to avoid irritation. It’s crucial to consider your scalp’s health here too. There’s definitely a bit of trial and error involved, but keeping an eye on how your hair and scalp react can guide you in finding the right balance. If the problems persist, consider talking to a dermatologist or a trichologist, as they can offer more targeted advice based on your specific scalp condition.
