how to use henna powder for hair - #23593

Meera

I am super confused about how to use henna powder for hair. A few weeks ago, I decided to try it out because I heard it’s natural and good for conditioning. But I didn’t really know what I was doing. I just mixed some henna powder with water and applied it straight on my hair without following any specific guide. The color turned out kinda weird, and I think I left it on for too long. My friend said I should’ve added some oil or lemon juice or something, but I didn’t know how to use henna powder for hair like *that*. Now my hair feels kinda dry and I’m worried I messed it up! Should I have mixed it with something else before applying? I mean, do you rinse it out after a certain time? And how often can I use henna powder for hair without damaging it? I saw some people on forums saying to apply it weekly, but I’m not sure. Also, is there a specific technique for applying it to get an even color? I want to eventually achieve that rich, red hue, but right now, I feel like I’m just guessing. Help!!! How to use henna powder for hair without ruining it?

Using henna for hair can indeed be a bit of a learning curve, but it’s definitely doable with the right approach. First off, let’s talk about preparing it. Henna is usually mixed with a mildly acidic liquid to help release the dye. Lemon juice is a common choice, but if you find it too drying, try orange juice or even apple cider vinegar. Some people do add oils like olive or coconut oil to provide added moisture, this is especially helpful if your hair tends to dry out easily. Once you’ve mixed the henna with your chosen liquid, the mixture should be left to sit for a few hours (or overnight) to allow the dye to release fully.

When it comes to applying henna, section your hair to ensure even coverage. Wear gloves to avoid staining your hands, and use an applicator brush or your hands to work the henna in from root to tip. After applying, wrap your hair in plastic wrap or a shower cap to keep it warm and moist, which aids the dyeing process. Typically, henna should be left on for about 1-4 hours, depending on how deep a color you want, but note that leaving it too long can contribute to dryness.

Once you feel you’ve achieved the desired color, rinse it out thoroughly with water. Avoid using shampoo immediately, as it can strip away some of the color. It’s okay to condition your hair afterwards, though, to help re-moisturize it. Henna can be used every 4-6 weeks as it is quite gentle compared to chemical dyes. Frequent applications can build up richness in color over time.

Keep in mind, achieving that rich red hue can take a few applications as layers of henna build up and enhance the color. The result can also vary depending on your natural hair color, so be mindful of that. If dryness continues to be an issue, ensure to tweak your recipe with more conditioning ingredients or consider deep-conditioning treatments between henna applications. With henna, a little experimentation is okay as long as you’re cautious—take notes on what’s working or not as everyone’s hair responds a bit differently.
