is it good to apply lemon on hair - #23735

Navya

I am really curious about whether is it good to apply lemon on hair. Lately, I've been struggling with oily scalp and dandruff, and my friend suggested trying lemon juice. At first, I wasn't sure, but after reading a bit online, I thought maybe it could help balance things out. I mean, I’ve heard about the benefits of lemon for skin, but is it good to apply lemon on hair too? Last week, I tried mixing some lemon with coconut oil, and honestly, it felt refreshing initially, but then my scalp started to feel really itchy after a few hours. Was that normal? I thought lemon was supposed to be good for clarity, but now I'm doubting if is it good to apply lemon on hair. Plus, I've been worried about my hair getting dry or damaged from the acidity. Should I dilute it more with water, or is that not necessary? Any personal experiences or advice would be super helpful because I really want to know if is it good to apply lemon on hair, or if I should ditch this idea altogether. Thanks a bunch!

Applying lemon juice on your hair can have benefits, but there are important considerations. Lemon contains citric acid, which can help in reducing dandruff by balancing the pH of the scalp and its natural antiseptic properties might help in controlling oil formation. However, because lemon juice is quite acidic, applying it directly to the scalp can sometimes cause irritation, especially if the skin is sensitive or has minor cuts. This might be why you experienced itching after application. It’s generally a good idea to dilute lemon juice with water to minimize irritation, which can also help prevent the hair from becoming dry or brittle due to the acidity. The mix with coconut oil was a good attempt for moisturizing, as coconut oil can counteract some drying effects, but you might want to ensure the lemon is properly diluted as well. If you decide to try lemon juice again, mix one part lemon juice with two parts water and apply it to your scalp for no more than 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing it out thoroughly. Also, consider testing out a small section of your scalp first to ensure it doesn’t lead to more irritation. If you continue to experience irritation, even with dilution, or notice any increase in dandruff or hair dryness, it’s better to discontinue its use and consult with a dermatologist for tailored advice. Serious or persistent symptoms demand professional evaluation to rule out underlying conditions that might be contributing to scalp health issues.
