how many times multani mitti should be applied - #23765
I am really confused about how many times multani mitti should be applied. Last month, I started using multani mitti for my oily skin because I read about its benefits online, and I thought it could help clear up some breakouts I’ve been dealing with for a while now. Initially, it felt great! My skin was super soft and the oiliness seemed controlled...but then after a week, it felt like my skin started to freak out! I applied it every other day, as I thought that would be okay, but then I got some flaky patches. I tried to reduce it to just like, twice a week. However, I noticed the oiliness creeping back in and I’m back to square one. I just don't know, how many times multani mitti should be applied?? Is every other day too much? Am I not using it right – should I mix it with something to make it less harsh on my skin? I really want to get this figured out cause I was kinda excited about the whole natural skincare thing. What do you all think? Any tips or personal experiences on how many times multani mitti should be applied for better results? Thanks!

Doctors' responses
Applying multani mitti, also known as Fuller’s earth, can certainly be beneficial for oily skin due to its absorbent properties, but finding the right balance is key. Overuse can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to the dryness and flaky patches you’ve noticed. Usually, for oily skin, applying multani mitti once or twice a week should be sufficient to help with oil control without overly drying the skin. Every other day might be a bit too frequent and could be causing your skin to overcompensate by producing more oil.
To make the mask less harsh, consider mixing it with a gentle, moisturizing component. Plain yogurt, honey, or even a few drops of your preferred facial oil can help maintain moisture while reaping the benefits of the multani mitti. Also, when you do rinse off the mask, follow it with a light, non-comedogenic moisturizer suited for oily skin to help restore some hydration without clogging your pores.
Always listen to your skin and adjust the frequency based on how it responds. If irritation or excessive dryness occurs, it’s wise to reduce application frequency and adjust your approach. Keep an eye on how your skin reacts not just in the short term, but over a few weeks to get a more consistent picture. If you’re consistently noticing issues despite these adjustments, or if problems persist, consulting with a dermatologist would be a good step. They can provide personalized recommendations and identify any underlying issues that might be contributing to your skin concerns.
