what to avoid during piles - #24470

Rohan

I am really struggling with piles right now, and I feel like I've tried everything but still no relief. A few weeks ago, I noticed some discomfort and, of course, I googled everything. I read up on what to avoid during piles, and there’s just so much info, but nothing feels clear. Like, should I stop eating fiber? I know fiber is supposed to help but I also read that some foods can make it worse. It’s all been such a whirlwind for me. I tried this fiber supplement last week, and it just made things more complicated, if you know what I mean. Been trying to make my diet better like avoiding spicy foods and dairy, but every time I think I’m making progress, something flares up. Also, what to avoid during piles when it comes to exercise? My friend told me to take it easy, but then other sources said gentle movement is good. Like, how do I figure out what to avoid during piles when the advice seems to contradict? And then there's the whole hydration thing, I’m drinking a lot but still feel stuck. Any suggestions or tips would mean the world!

During a bout with piles, or hemorrhoids, the goal is to reduce swelling and mitigate symptoms. Aim for a diet that helps normalize bowel movements. Contrary to what you might have read, fiber should not be avoided; in fact, it’s essential. Soluble fibers like oats, peas, beans, and certain fruits can help soften stool, making it easier to pass and reducing pressure on your hemorrhoids. That said, introducing too much fiber too quickly might cause bloating or gas, so give your digestive system time to adjust by increasing fiber intake gradually. Make sure to also increase your water consumption as you add fiber to your diet since it helps fiber do its job effectively. However, it’s common to feel like you’re drinking more but not seeing immediate results—stay patient as it can take a bit to notice a difference.

While you’re right that some foods can aggravate piles, like spicy foods or caffeine, focus more on overall dietary balance rather than worrying about individual items unless there’s a clear trigger for your symptoms. As for dairy, moderation is key unless you notice it specifically causes constipation or discomfort for you.

Exercise-wise, gentle activities such as walking or yoga can actually be beneficial. They aid in bowel regularity without straining your abdomen or rectal tissues. Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous workouts that increase abdominal pressure during a flare-up, as these could exacerbate symptoms.

Concerning hydration, keep up with drinking plenty of fluids. This, combined with fiber, will help reduce the straining during bowel movements, one of the primary causes of hemorrhoid flare-ups. Lastly, during flare-ups, avoiding long periods of sitting or standing, heavy lifting, and anything that might excessively strain your pelvic floor can be important. Over-the-counter topical treatments can sometimes offer temporary relief, but if symptoms persist, consult with a healthcare provider.
