what dissolves kidney stones fast

Zoya

I am really freaking out right now. Had some kidney issues before, but never anything like this! So, I was at work, and out of nowhere, I felt this insane pain in my lower back – like a shooting pain. I thought maybe it was just a muscle thing or maybe I slept weird, right? But then the pain got worse, and I ended up in the ER. They did a CT scan and turns out I have kidney stones. Ugh! The doc said they’re pretty small, but they’re causing a lot of distress. I’m already on some pain meds, but I just want to know what dissolves kidney stones fast. They mentioned something about drinking tons of water but I mean honestly, that only goes so far. I've heard that certain foods or drinks could help, like lemon juice or something. I’m also curious if there are any supplements or other home remedies that actually work? I'm totally stressed about waiting for them to pass. Like, any tips from anyone about what dissolves kidney stones fast would be super helpful. Also, how will I know when they're gone? I mean, can you feel it or what? Thanks in advance!

Doctors' responses

For kidney stones, especially if they’re small, increasing fluid intake is generally a first-line approach to help them pass more quickly. Staying well-hydrated can reduce concentration of substances that form stones, aiding in their passage. Aim for at least 2-3 liters of water daily unless told otherwise by your healthcare provider. Sometimes, certain dietary modifications can assist too. Yes, lemon juice can help - it’s a good natural source of citrate, which inhibits stone formation and may aid in breaking them down. Mix lemon juice with water frequently throughout the day. But keep in mind, this isn’t a quick fix – just supportive.

Additionally, depending on the type of stone, your doctor might suggest dietary changes. For example, those with calcium oxalate stones might benefit from reducing oxalate-rich foods like nuts, chocolate, and tea while maintaining a normal calcium intake. In some cases, medications like thiazides for calcium stones, or allopurinol for uric acid stones, might be prescribed to alter urine composition or assist in dissolving stones.

There are no over-the-counter supplements with strong research backing for dissolving stones. Some people explore herbal remedies like chanca piedra, but clinical evidence supporting their effectiveness is limited and you should discuss any supplement use with your doctor to avoid interactions with prescribed medication.

You’re already on pain medication, which helps with symptom management while the stones pass. As for knowing when they’re gone, the pain typically diminishes as they move into the bladder. You may notice small stones in your urine, but often people don’t actually see them. Regular follow-ups with imaging may be necessary to confirm they’ve passed. If you experience fever, chills, or blood in urine, seek immediate care as these might indicate a more serious condition. Always liaise closely with your healthcare provider to ensure management strategies are safe and tailored to your unique situation.
