can a uti cause diarrhea - #25990
I am really worried about something that’s been going on with my health. So, a few weeks ago, I started experiencing what I thought was just another round of a urinary tract infection. My doctor confirmed it was a UTI and I got some antibiotics. But then something unexpected happened – I started having diarrhea. Like, it just came out of nowhere. I’ve always thought of UTIs as just causing discomfort and frequent trips to the bathroom, but it got me thinking. Can a UTI cause diarrhea? I mean, I’m wondering if it’s maybe a side effect of the meds or something related to the infection itself? I also had a fever and felt super fatigued, which made this whole situation even worse. I’ve read a bit online, but the info is kind of mixed and I’m just not sure who to trust. Plus, I don’t want to make it worse. Has anyone else experienced this?? Can a UTI cause diarrhea, or should I be looking into something else here? Any insights would be super helpful! Thanks!

Doctors' responses
UTI symptoms typically include pain while urinating, frequent need to urinate, and abdominal discomfort, but diarrhea isn’t a usual symptom of a urinary tract infection itself. What might be happening here is that the diarrhea could be related to the antibiotics you’ve been taking. Many antibiotics can disturb your gut flora balance, potentially leading to diarrhea as a side effect. It’s quite common for individuals taking antibiotics to experience some degree of gastrointestinal upset. If you started experiencing diarrhea shortly after beginning the medication, it could likely be the antibiotic at play. Additionally, the fever and fatigue you mentioned could be indicative of the body’s response not only to the UTI, but also as a reaction to the medication or even another underlying infection or condition. If your symptoms are severe, persistent, or you’re noticing new symptoms, it’s crucial to reach out to your healthcare provider. They may need to switch your antibiotic or investigate further to rule out other causes such as Clostridioides difficile infection, which can occur after antibiotic use, particularly if the diarrhea is severe. To manage the diarrhea, ensure you’re staying hydrated, perhaps include more probiotics in your diet, either in food form or as supplements, as this might help restore your gut flora. If the diarrhea persists beyond a few days, gets worse, or if you exhibit any signs of dehydration, it’s important to seek prompt medical evaluation. While it’s necessary to address the UTI with antibiotics, it’s equally important to monitor how your body reacts to the treatment and to address any concerning symptoms with your doctor.
