how much coq10 should i take with statins - #26127

Manvi

I am dealing with this weird situation where my doctor prescribed statins for my cholesterol issues, but ever since I started taking them, I feel like I’ve been dragging. I read somewhere that statins can deplete CoQ10 levels in the body, and now I’m wondering how much CoQ10 should I take with statins? It’s really frustrating because I don’t want to stop the statins since they’re supposed to help my heart, but I feel like a zombie, and I just want my energy back. I tried doing some research on how much CoQ10 should I take with statins but I can’t seem to find a clear answer. Some sites say 100 mg while others recommend up to 200 mg, and honestly, it’s all a bit overwhelming. Plus, I don’t want to take too much or too little, you know? My energy levels have dropped drastically, and I just feel off. Like, am I doing the right thing by considering CoQ10? Should I consult my doc about how much CoQ10 should I take with statins or just give it a go myself? Anyone else dealing with this?? Thanks for any advice!

Doctors' responses

Statins can indeed lead to a decrease in CoQ10 levels, which might contribute to the feeling of fatigue you’re experiencing. CoQ10 is an important enzyme for energy production in your cells, so it’s understandable that you’d want to find a balance that supports both your cholesterol management and overall energy levels. While there’s no definitive consensus on the exact dose you should take, commonly suggested dosages for individuals taking statins range from 100 to 200 mg per day of CoQ10. Starting at the lower end, such as 100 mg, can be a reasonable approach to see if it helps alleviate some of your symptoms without overshooting what you might need.

Before you decide on a dosage, it would be wise to speak with your healthcare provider. They can consider any other medications you’re on, your overall health status, and specific needs, ensuring CoQ10 won’t interfere with other prescriptions or conditions. Your doctor could also recommend a reputable brand or formulation, as dietary supplements can sometimes vary in quality. Monitoring how you feel after starting CoQ10 can guide any necessary adjustments in your regimen. Keep in mind that while CoQ10 supplementation is thought to be safe and well-tolerated, individual responses can vary. Changes may not be immediate, so allowing a few weeks to assess its impact on your energy levels is generally sound. If your fatigue persists despite supplementation, make sure to discuss this with your healthcare provider to rule out any other underlying issues that could be contributing to how you feel.
