what happens if a uti goes untreated - #26152

Rian

I am really worried because I've been having some pretty uncomfortable symptoms. Just last week, I started feeling this burning sensation when I pee, plus I had to go to the bathroom way more often than normal. At first, I thought it was just a little irritation, but this week it's turning into something more serious, and I've been too stressed out to see a doctor. A friend mentioned it could be a UTI, and now I'm freaking out because I keep wondering what happens if a UTI goes untreated. I mean, I've heard it can turn into kidney problems or worse, but is that really true? Ugh, my lower back has been aching a bit too, which is kinda freaky. I just can't seem to shake this feeling that if I don't act on this soon, it might lead to something really bad. What happens if a UTI goes untreated for days or even weeks? Like, is there a point where it becomes dangerous? I'm scared of it escalating, and I'm also worried about juggling appointments around my work schedule. If any doctors here can give me some advice or share their experiences about what happens if a UTI goes untreated, I would really appreciate it! I don’t want to be dramatic but I feel like I'm at that point where waiting might not be the best idea.

Doctors' responses

If a urinary tract infection (UTI) goes untreated, it can indeed develop into more severe health problems. Initially, an untreated UTI can lead to a progression of symptoms like increased discomfort, frequent urination, urgency, and cloudy or strong-smelling urine. More concerning, however, is that the infection can ascend from the bladder to the kidneys. This can result in a condition known as pyelonephritis, which is a more serious kidney infection. It’s quite common for kidney infections to cause symptoms such as back pain or flank pain, fever, nausea, and fatigue. The good news is that pyelonephritis can usually be treated effectively with antibiotics, but it does require prompt medical attention to prevent complications like sepsis, which can be life-threatening. The potential for untreated UTI to escalate underscores the importance of seeking medical evaluation sooner rather than later—even if you’re trying to juggle your time around a demanding schedule. As much as a hassle as it might feel, early treatment often involves a simple course of antibiotics that can alleviate symptoms fairly quickly. Meanwhile, staying well-hydrated can help flush bacteria from the urinary tract. Try to prioritize a medical consult, as only a healthcare provider can accurately diagnose and prescribe the appropriate treatment based on your specific symptoms and health background. Additionally, rest and self-care should be considered alongside, but not instead of medical treatment. If severe symptoms like high fever, intense back pain, or vomiting develop, these are red flags signaling immediate attention from a healthcare professional is needed.
