how to reverse chronic kidney disease stage 5

Aayan

I am really struggling right now and need some advice on how to reverse chronic kidney disease stage 5. My dad was diagnosed a few months ago, and honestly, it felt like a punch in the gut. He was super healthy before and all of a sudden he’s on this strict diet and has to go for dialysis like 3 times a week. I know they say chronic kidney disease stage 5 is pretty serious — like the final stage and all that, but I’m hearing tales from people online saying there are things you can do? I mean, if it’s stage 5, is reversing chronic kidney disease stage 5 even possible? He’s been following the doctor’s orders, but he’s still feeling so down and weak. Some of my friends keep saying certain diets or supplements can help, but I can’t figure out what’s real. Last week, I read about someone who said they managed to get back some kidney function. How to reverse chronic kidney disease stage 5 really becomes a worry at this point! I'm hoping maybe there are natural remedies? Like, can the right foods really do something beneficial? Or is it mostly a waiting game? Feeling stressed out, and just want to do anything to help him feel better and maybe, possibly, reverse chronic kidney disease stage 5, you know? Any guidance or personal stories would be so appreciated!

Doctors' responses

Reversing chronic kidney disease stage 5 isn’t something that current medical understanding supports. At this stage, the kidneys have suffered severe damage and typically cannot regain function. Stage 5, also known as end-stage renal disease, often requires dialysis or a kidney transplant as primary treatment options. Dialysis helps to do the work that the kidneys can’t, removing waste, excess fluid, and maintaining vital chemical balance in the body. While it’s understandably frustrating, focusing on supportive care and management is crucial. Continue following the healthcare provider’s guidance regarding dietary restrictions — typically involving low-sodium, low-potassium, and low-phosphate intake — to help manage the condition. The role of diet is to prevent further damage and manage symptoms rather than reverse the disease. While there are stories of using natural remedies or particular diets, such as plant-based or Mediterranean, none are proven to reverse the condition. They can potentially aid overall health but should only be pursued with a doctor’s guidance to avoid unintended harm. Furthermore, if a transplant becomes a viable option, it holds the potential to significantly improve life quality and function longer-term. Advising on supplements without professional oversight is risky because many can interfere with kidney function or dialysis. It’s imperative your dad stays connected with his nephrologist to manage symptoms and evaluate treatment. Regular consultation will also help identify any suitable trials for new treatments should they become available. Remember, while the situation feels dire, proper medical care and staying aligned with healthcare advice are the best avenues.
