side effects of metoprolol succinate - #28068

Advait

I am pretty worried about some things happening after starting this new med called Metoprolol Succinate. A couple months ago, my doctor prescribed it because my blood pressure was high, you know? I’ve been trying to stay in shape — even run a little! But ever since I began taking the Metoprolol Succinate, I can’t help feeling different, like I can’t run as long without getting winded. I’m also super tired all the time. It’s like my energy dropped off a cliff! And I keep reading about the side effects of Metoprolol Succinate but it’s confusing, some say it helps people but then you get all these lists of side effects of Metoprolol Succinate that sound scary. The weirdest thing is I also feel kind of dizzy sometimes, especially if I stand up too quickly. Do these side effects of Metoprolol Succinate go away eventually? Like, should I tell my doctor to switch me to something else? I just don’t know if this is normal or if I should be concerned! Anyone went through similar stuff?

Doctors' responses

Metoprolol succinate, commonly used to manage high blood pressure, certainly can have some side effects, and you’re absolutely not alone in experiencing them. It’s a beta-blocker that reduces heart rate and blood pressure, so feeling winded or more tired than usual isn’t uncommon. Beta-blockers can affect exercise tolerance because they slow the heart rate, which might be why you’re feeling unable to run as long without getting winded or the drop in energy. Fatigue is a known side effect because your body is adjusting to the medication’s effects on the cardiovascular system. Dizziness, particularly on standing up quickly, is also often reported due to a potential drop in blood pressure, a condition known as orthostatic hypotension. These side effects might lessen as your body adjusts over time, but if they’re significantly affecting your quality of life, it’s worth discussing with your doctor. Adjustment of dosage or switching to another medication might be necessary if these symptoms are persistent or troubling. Each person reacts differently, and finding the right medication is crucial, which sometimes requires trial and error. Remember, never stop taking the medication without consulting your healthcare provider, as abrupt cessation, especially with beta-blockers, can have serious consequences. Make sure to communicate openly with your doctor about all the symptoms you’re experiencing. They may choose to monitor the situation, adjust the dosage, or explore alternative medications. Don’t hesitate to reach out for medical advice if your dizziness or fatigue worsens or starts impacting your daily activities significantly.
