dolo 650 uses age limit - #28170

Rashi

I am really concerned about my son who's been running a temp for the last couple of days. He's 7 years old, and his fever seems pretty high, like around 102°F. The pediatrician suggested using Dolo 650, which I believe is paracetamol, but I started wondering about the dolo 650 uses age limit. I mean, is it safe for him? I see that Dolo is often recommended for adults, but I'm not clear on when it’s appropriate for kids. I remember my neighbor saying she gave it to her child when he was younger, but I think her son was a little older than mine. I've done some research online, and some places mention that Dolo 650 is for teenagers and adults. Should I truly be worried? Is there a specific dosage I should follow for his age? Since his fever doesn’t seem to break, I’m a bit frazzled and just don’t want to mess this up. It's not like I can just pop into a pharmacy and ask them when everythings so hectic. Aren’t there also different formulations for kids? Just trying to figure this out because the last thing I want is to give him something that's not for his age! Would appreciate any advice from you all.

Doctors' responses

Dolo 650 is indeed a formulation of paracetamol and it’s primarily intended for adults and older children, usually advised for those above 12 years of age. For a child of 7, it’s generally recommended to use pediatric formulations of paracetamol, which come in either syrup or suspension form. These are tailored to ensure children receive the correct dosage appropriate for their age and weight, which is crucial to prevent both underdosing or accidental overdosing. Typically, paracetamol for children is dosed in a range that reflects their body weight — a common rule is 10-15 mg per kilogram of body weight per dose, every 4 to 6 six hours as needed, but not exceeding 5 doses in 24 hours. Given that you are working to manage your son’s fever specifically, and considering his age, it’s important to stick to a pediatric version. It is recommended to consult with a healthcare professional to confirm what adjustment might be necessary based on your child’s specific circumstances including any other medications he may be taking or health concerns he has. In cases where fever does not respond to usual measures, or if it persists or he shows signs of dehydration, lethargy, or other concerning symptoms, it’s important to seek prompt medical attention. Fevers can often be symptoms of underlying infections that may require more than symptomatic treatment, and catching any issues early can be crucial. Meanwhile, ensuring the child is hydrated and comfortable can be helpful. Also, check his fluid intake and make sure he remains in a cool, comfortable environment to help manage his temperature until you can have more guidance from your pediatrician. Avoid self-medicating with adult medications unless specifically directed by a healthcare professional because improper dosing can exacerbate the situation.
