What is causing my daily cold-like symptoms with sneezing and watery eyes?

Client_7bf48d

Doctor, I am 21 years old. I have been facing a recurring problem. Every day, I get symptoms like a cold in the morning after waking up, again in the afternoon, and also in the evening. Each episode usually lasts for about an hour and then goes away on its own. During these episodes, I have frequent sneezing, watery discharge from the nose, and watery eyes. This has been happening daily and is very troubling for me. Please tell me what this condition could be and what is the proper treatment.

Dr. Bharat Joshi
I’m a periodontist and academician with a strong clinical and teaching background. Over the last 4 years and 8 months, I’ve been actively involved in dental education, guiding students at multiple levels including dental hygienist, BDS, and MDS programs. Currently, I serve as a Reader at MMCDSR in Ambala, Haryana—a role that allows me to merge my academic passion with hands-on experience. Clinically, I’ve been practicing dentistry for the past 12 years. From routine procedures like scaling and root planing to more advanced cases involving grafts, biopsies, and implant surgeries. Honestly, I still find joy in doing a simple RCT when it’s needed. It’s not just about the procedure but making sure the patient feels comfortable and safe. Academically, I have 26 research publications to my credit. I’m on the editorial boards of the Archives of Dental Research and Journal of Dental Research and Oral Health, and I’ve spent a lot of time reviewing manuscripts—from case reports to meta-analyses and even book reviews. I was honored to receive the “Best Editor” award by Innovative Publications, and Athena Publications recognized me as an “excellent reviewer,” which honestly came as a bit of a surprise! In 2025, I had the opportunity to present a guest lecture in Italy on traumatic oral lesions. Sharing my work and learning from peers globally has been incredibly fulfilling. Outside academics and clinics, I’ve also worked in the pharmaceutical sector as a Drug Safety Associate for about 3 years, focusing on pharmacovigilance. That role really sharpened my attention to detail and deepened my understanding of drug interactions and adverse effects. My goal is to keep learning, and give every patient and student my absolute best.

These symptoms you describe—frequent sneezing, watery nose, and watery eyes—are commonly associated with allergic rhinitis. This is a condition where your immune system overreacts to allergens in your environment, such as pollen, dust mites, mold, or pet dander. Given the timing of the episodes, it’s possible that certain common allergens in your environment are triggering your symptoms, such as pet bedding, or dust that accumulates in the mornings and evenings. To manage these symptoms effectively, start by identifying potential allergens that you come into contact with regularly. Regular cleaning of your living space, removing dust and pet dander with a HEPA filter vacuum, and using hypoallergenic pillows and beddings might help reduce exposure. It could also be beneficial to monitor weather reports to avoid high-allergen days if pollen is a suspect. Over-the-counter antihistamines, like cetirizine or loratadine, can be effective in reducing the symptoms, but it’s crucial to follow the dosing guidelines on the package or prescription. You may want to consult with an allergist who can perform tests to determine specific allergens, after which immunotherapy might be recommended as a potential long-term solution. If your symptoms persist or worsen, follow up with a healthcare provider is advisable to rule out other causes or complications, such as nasal polyps or more specific triggers. Ensure any pharmaceutical intervention is discussed to align with your personal health conditions and medications.
