What is delayed puberty and should I get checked for it at 16 years old?

Client_7760b7

Hello doctor. I am 16 years 5 months old and worried my puberty may be delayed. My height is about 4'10" and weight 53 kg. Pubic hair started around age 15. I have little underarm hair, slight facial fuzz, and only a slight voice change. I get morning erections and more sweating/body odor, but I still look much younger than classmates. I want to know if this could be delayed puberty and whether I should get checked.

Doctors' responses

Delayed puberty occurs when a teenager goes through the process later than usual. For most boys, puberty begins around ages 9 to 14, so it’s considered delayed if there are no signs of puberty by age 14. You’ve mentioned some development like pubic hair around age 15, morning erections, and some changes in body odor, which are indications that puberty has started, although possibly later than average. Considering that you’re 16 and have minimal progression in other areas, it’s reasonable to have this evaluation. It could involve factors like family history, nutritional status, and overall health conditions. Some of the causes for delayed puberty include constitutional growth delay, which could just mean a natural slower development, but there could also be underlying medical conditions like hormonal imbalances or genetic conditions. Therefore, it’s worth consulting with a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They might conduct a physical examination, review family history, and potentially do blood tests to check hormone levels such as testosterone. In some cases, a bone age X-ray might be used to look at growth potential. Getting checked will provide clarity and help ensure there aren’t any other health conditions needing attention. If required, your doctor may discuss treatment options that can help stimulate development. Being proactive is beneficial, particularly to address any underlying issues early and to also provide peace of mind.
