What could cause sudden strange behavior and confusion in my father after a massage?

Client_602f02

My father was already feeling sick before the incident. While my mother was massaging him, he suddenly started behaving strangely and did not seem conscious or aware of what he was doing. He got on all fours, crawled upstairs toward the temple, kept repeating phrases, and then started shaking. During the episode he was not responding normally and afterward he seemed very weak/confused. We are worried because this behavior was sudden and unusual, and we want to know if it could be a seizure, neurological problem, or another medical condition.”

Doctors' responses

Given your father’s sudden strange behavior and confusion following a massage, it’s crucial to consider several medical possibilities. What you describe sounds concerningly like a seizure, which can include unusual movements, repetitive phrases, confusion, and post-episode weakness known as the postictal state. Seizures can be triggered by underlying neurological conditions, metabolic imbalances, or acute illnesses such as infections or fever. The fact that he was not fully conscious or aware during the incident further suggests this possibility. It is important to rule out other serious conditions as well, such as a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or stroke, especially if there are any pre-existing risk factors like high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease. You didn’t mention if there were any recent illnesses or events before the episode, but infections or electrolyte disturbances could also cause such symptoms. Immediate medical evaluation is essential in this situation. An emergency department visit can help determine if emergency interventions are needed, and tests such as a CT scan, MRI, or EEG might be necessary to assess brain function and rule out structural or electrical problems. Blood tests could also help identify potential metabolic causes. While waiting for emergency services, ensure he stays safe and in a comfortable position, especially if there’s another episode. Avoid restraining him and try to note the duration and characteristics of any further episodes, as these details can be valuable for medical professionals. It is paramount to seek immediate medical attention given the symptoms described, as timely diagnosis and treatment are vital for his safety and health.
