Doctors' responses

Nasal polyps recurring even after multiple surgeries can be frustrating. Sometimes the underlying inflammation continues to persist, leading to regrowth of these polyps. The first step is to ensure that all contributing factors are being addressed, particularly if you also experience conditions like asthma or allergic rhinitis. A very important strategy is managing the inflammation. It’s crucial to revisit medical treatments like corticosteroid nasal sprays, such as fluticasone or mometasone, which is often the first-line treatment. They can help reduce polyp size and inflammation over time with regular use. More recently, biologic medications like dupilumab, an injectable monoclonal antibody, have been showing promise for nasal polyps that are hard-to-treat. These target specific pathways in inflammation and may be considered especially when other treatments have failed. Ensuring you’re avoiding common triggers is also important, like allergens (dust mites, pollen) or irritants (cigarette smoke, strong odors). Using a saline nasal rinse can help clear mucus and allergens, providing symptom relief. If your polyps are associated with chronic rhinosinusitis, sinus surgery with longer-lasting results might be necessary. Implementing a comprehensive treatment plan might involve consult with an ENT specialist who is well-versed with advanced medical therapies in coordination with your allergist or immunologist. Since your voice and professional life are being affected, consider vocal therapy to protect and strengthen your voice in the meantime. Always ensure you are attending to those symptoms that might indicate an infection, like fever or increased facial pain, as these require prompt medical attention.
