Itchy and dry scalp. Lots of dead skin comes out of scalp - #10620

Nazampreet kaur

My scalp is excessively dry and itchy all time. When I do scratch it, dead skin comes off and dead layer from scalp. I do not know what to do with it. Tiny white layer comes in from head upon scratching.

Doctors’ responses

What you’re describing is actually quite a common issue that could be attributed to a few conditions. The persistent itchiness and flakiness of your scalp might suggest something like seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis. Seborrheic dermatitis often manifests as dandruff, which can sometimes be greasy or dry white flakes. It tends to be more noticeable in certain areas like the scalp, eyebrows, and corners of the nose. Psoriasis, however, typically presents as reddish, silvery scaly patches. Both of these can cause significant discomfort and embarrassment.

Firstly, consider trying over-the-counter medicated shampoos designed to reduce scalp flaking and itching. Look for ingredients like selenium sulfide, ketoconazole, or zinc pyrithione, which can manage the underlying fungal or bacterial elements that often contribute to these conditions. Use these shampoos as directed, usually a few times a week, and let them sit on your scalp for a few minutes before rinsing.

If you find minimal relief with these treatments or your symptoms worsen, it’s a good idea to reach out to a healthcare provider. They can assess if your condition requires prescription-strength treatments, which might include topical steroids or other medications to reduce inflammation and scaling. Lifestyle factors like stress management and diet also play a role; reducing stress and maintaining a healthy diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins might improve overall scalp health. Finally, be cautious with hairstyle products and avoid anything that might irritate or exacerbate your symptoms. If you notice any pain, unusual scaling, or signs of infection like oozing or redness, seek medical attention promptly.
