Doctors’ responses

Swelling and redness in the vulva and especially around the clitoris may have several causes, like infections, allergies, or even skin conditions but it persisting for more than a week with pain indicates that it’s essential to consider consulting a gynecologist. While using an intimate wash may feel soothing or maintain hygiene, it doesn’t usually address the underlying causes of these symptoms and, in some cases, could irritate further. To manage discomfort while waiting for an appointment, avoid using any products that contain fragrances or harsh chemicals, as they can exacerbate irritation. You can try applying a cold compress to the area to reduce swelling. Wearing loose-fitting, breathable cotton underwear is also helpful. However, if there’s any discharge, or if symptoms such as fever or worsening pain occur, it could indicate an infection and would need prompt medical evaluation. A gynecologist would perform an examination, and may run tests like swabs or urine tests to ascertain the cause, leading to tailored treatment such as antibiotics for a bacterial infection or antifungal treatment if it’s a yeast issue. Since persistent symptoms could lean towards either infections or other medical conditions like dermatitis or even vulvodynia, avoiding self-treatment for more extended periods is crucial to not delay appropriate care.
