Can fatty liver cause weakness? - #12441

Agastya

I am really worried about my health lately and I just can't seem to shake this feeling of weakness. A few months ago, I found out from my doctor that I have a fatty liver. At first, I thought it was no big deal, but now I’m wondering if can fatty liver cause weakness? I’ve been feelin kinda tired all the time, like no energy to do anything, even small stuff like climbing the stairs or going for a little walk. I didn’t really connect the dots until a friend mentioned that lethargy could be a symptom. Some days, it feels like I could sleep for a week straight and still be drained. I read online that can fatty liver cause weakness and fatigue, but I'm not sure if that’s just something people say or if there’s actual proof behind it. My doc didn’t seem overly concerned when I asked but I kinda get the sense that they might not think it's serious? Should I be looking into this or am I just overthinking things? Like, what are the connections here? I really hate this tired feeling—it's affecting everything! Anyone else feel like this with fatty liver? What did you do?

Doctors’ responses

Fatty liver can indeed be associated with feelings of weakness or fatigue. This condition, specifically known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) when not related to alcohol use, involves the accumulation of fat in liver cells. While the liver itself does not have nerves to feel pain or discomfort, the overall impact on body systems can contribute to feeling drained. The fatigue may occur due to inflammatory processes or hormonal imbalances triggered by the liver’s compromised state. Additionally, fatty liver can sometimes coexist with other metabolic conditions, like insulin resistance or metabolic syndromes, which could also lead to a pervasive feeling of tiredness. However, it’s vital to determine if your fatigue is directly related to fatty liver or if other factors are at play. Make sure to review any medications you’re on, as they could contribute to tiredness as well. Consider lifestyle factors—diet, exercise, stress levels—that might be influencing your energy. A generalized weakness could also be symptomatic of more immediate concerns, so you should connect again with your healthcare provider for a thorough assessment. It might be helpful to request liver function tests or other diagnostic evaluations to understand if the liver function is affecting your energy levels. Making lifestyle changes can benefit both your liver health and overall energy—aiming for a balanced diet, regular exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight can significantly improve your symptoms. Always follow up with a healthcare professional regarding persistent or worsening fatigue to exclude any other underlying health issues that might require immediate attention.
