post pimple marks - #12593

Aadhya

I am really struggling with these post pimple marks lately. Like, I never used to have this issue, but after a recent breakout that seemed to last forever, I'm left with these dark spots all over my cheeks ugh! I tried countless creams and serums, but nothing seems to work. A friend mentioned that the marks will fade with time, but I swear some of them are sticking around for ages. It’s like they’re planning to stay permanently, you know? Also, I feel like I’ve tried everything from lemon juice to laser treatments. Have any of you dealt with these post pimple marks and what actually helped? I even read that vitamin C is supposed to help, but I gotta admit I’m really confused about what to use and how often. Do these marks get better as my skin gets healthier, or am I fighting a losing battle here? Any tips on what worked for you would be super helpful. I just want to feel confident without having to cake on makeup to hide these annoying post pimple marks. Thanks!

Doctors’ responses

Dealing with post-pimple marks can indeed be frustrating. It’s great that you’re looking for evidence-based methods to manage them. Those dark spots, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), are common after breakouts and can linger but are generally not permanent. Several factors influence their resolution, including skin type and sun exposure. Using sunscreen regularly is crucial as it prevents further darkening and helps marks fade over time. Aim for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Vitamin C is indeed a helpful option; it’s an antioxidant that can brighten skin and reduce pigmentation by inhibiting melanin production. Look for serums with a concentration of around 10-20% and apply in the morning after cleansing and before moisturizing. Don’t overuse it—once a day is generally sufficient. It’s important to be consistent and patient with these treatments, as results can take weeks to months. If you’ve tried topical treatments without success, chemical peels or microdermabrasion might be other options to explore under the guidance of a dermatologist. They can accelerate skin turnover and improve texture. Laser treatments are often effective, but should be reserved for persistent marks and undertaken with professional consultation, as they vary in intensity and outcome. Be cautious with DIY remedies like lemon juice; they can irritate skin and worsen pigmentation issues. Keeping skin well-moisturized and avoiding picking at any blemishes is beneficial as well to prevent further damage. Lastly, maintaining a good skincare routine tailored to acne-prone skin can reduce future breakouts and improve overall skin health, ultimately contributing to quicker recovery of post-pimple marks.
