liver which side - #13178

Ranveer

I am kinda freaking out over here. I’ve been having some nagging pains on my right side and I heard it could be related to my liver. I don’t know much about all this but I just had this weird discomfort for like a week now. Sometimes it’s sharp, but mostly it's like this dull ache. I keep wondering, liver which side is it exactly supposed to be? Because I feel it more on the right, like really low down. A friend of mine said that maybe liver issues can make you feel off in other ways too, like being tired or having weird digestion stuff? I just got my blood work done and they did mention some enzyme levels were a bit off, which made me think more about the liver. Like, if I have a liver concern, what signs should I really be paying attention to? I just wanna be sure I’m not missing anything serious. I'm kinda scared of what it could mean. Anyone else had this pain and found out it was related to liver problems? I mean, liver which side is it typically on? Is there any reason for me to be more concerned if it’s hurting more on the right? Just looking for thoughts or experiences, cause this whole thing really has me on edge.

Doctors’ responses

The liver is situated in the upper right quadrant of your abdomen, just beneath the ribcage. If you’re experiencing pain on the right side, particularly in the upper area, it’s plausible that it could be related to your liver. While the discomfort you’ve described could have a variety of causes, liver problems sometimes do manifest with such pain or discomfort. It’s worth noting that liver issues can also cause symptoms like fatigue, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), dark urine, pale stool, nausea, or unexplained weight loss. These signs are important to monitor. If your blood work showed elevated liver enzymes, it suggests some kind of liver inflammation or damage. This could be cause by several factors, such as alcohol use, viral infections like hepatitis, certain medications, or fatty liver disease. Conditions like gallbladder disease or even muscular pains can also present with right-sided discomfort, but these would typically have a slightly different set of symptoms. It’s important to remember that persistent pain, especially if it’s worsening or comes with other alarm signs like fever, jaundice, or significant changes in bowel habits, should prompt a visit to your healthcare provider. They might recommend imaging studies like an ultrasound, or further lab tests to narrow down the cause. In the meantime, avoiding alcohol, staying hydrated, and maintaining a diet that’s not excessively fatty can be wise steps until a clearer cause is identified. Given your ongoing symptoms and the lab findings, I recommend following up with your doctor to discuss these symptoms in detail to guide necessary further evaluation.
