is banana good for dengue patient - #14497

Mira

I am wondering if banana is good for dengue patient? My sister just got diagnosed with dengue last week, and I’m really concerned about her diet. The doctors told us she needs to stay hydrated and eat nutrient-rich foods, but I'm not sure if banana falls into that category. Before this, I hardly knew anything about dengue and now I’m just trying to absorb all this info. She used to love bananas and I remembered reading somewhere that they might help with energy levels and digestion? Could banana be beneficial or is it something we should avoid right now? She also has some nausea and a bit of an upset stomach, which is making her not want to eat much at all. Kinda frustrating to watch her struggle to find something that agrees with her, ya know? I've seen differing opinions online, and I guess I’m just trying to look out for her the best I can. If banana isn’t a good option, what would be some better food choices for her to help her recover? Ugh, I really hope she gets better soon, but want to make sure I’m doing everything right!

Doctors' responses

Bananas can actually be a good choice for a dengue patient. They are easily digestible, which can be helpful if your sister is experiencing nausea or an upset stomach. Additionally, bananas are a good source of carbohydrates and calories, which might help boost her energy levels. They are rich in potassium as well, which can support maintaining electrolyte balance, especially important when dehydration is a risk. But remember, they won’t directly affect the dengue virus itself; they’re just a part of the supportive care. It’s important to focus on a balanced diet overall, so consider including other nutrient-rich foods, like soups or broths, which are hydrating and can also be soothing if she’s feeling nauseous. Fruits like papaya and juices high in vitamin C can be beneficial too—they may support her immune system. She needs to stay well-hydrated, so encourage her to drink plenty of fluids like oral rehydration solutions or coconut water, which is rich in electrolytes. Avoid spicy or very oily foods as these might irritate her stomach further. If her symptoms worsen—like persistent vomiting or abdominal pain—you should reach out to her healthcare provider promptly, as dengue can become severe. Always follow any specific dietary advice from her doctors, who know her case best.
