aloe vera gel is good for face - #16200

Swara

I am really curious about this whole thing with aloe vera gel is good for face. I've started using it because I've heard a lot of good stuff, but I wanna know more. A few weeks ago, I had this skin issue where my face was super dry and flaky - ugh! I tried a bunch of creams, but nothing worked until my friend suggested trying aloe vera gel. Initially, I was skeptical, I mean, it's just a plant, right? But wow, after just a couple of days of applying it, my skin felt a lot better! Like, the dryness was reduced but still, I noticed some redness around my cheeks that I never had before, which got me wondering if too much could maybe cause that? Or, is aloe vera gel is good for face in general, not just for helping dryness? What about acne? I don't want to make things worse. I read online some people mix it with other stuff, and I don't know if I should do that or just keep it simple with just the gel. Like, if aloe vera gel is good for face, can it help with scarring too? I’ve got a little of that too from previous breakouts. Just looking for advice before I go too crazy with products!

Doctors’ responses

Aloe vera gel is popular for its soothing and moisturizing properties, and it can indeed be beneficial for facial skin. It’s commonly used to alleviate dryness, as you mentioned, because it hydrates without being greasy, making it a suitable option for different skin types. The plant’s gel has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which can help in reducing skin irritation, such as redness; however, if you’re experiencing increased redness, it’s worth considering the possibility of an allergic reaction or sensitivity. It might be helpful to try a patch test with the gel on a small area of your skin and observe any reactions. Regarding acne, aloe vera gel can be helpful due to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, which can reduce redness and bacteria-related breakouts. However, it’s not a stand-alone treatment for all acne cases, particularly if your acne is severe or doesn’t respond to typical over-the-counter solutions. For your concern about scarring, the gel might assist in preventing scarring by supporting the skin’s natural healing process due to its hydrating properties, though expectations should be managed, as results can vary. Combining it with other active ingredients like retinoids or vitamin C could enhance scar treatment, but any combination should be done cautiously to avoid irritation. As for mixing aloe vera with other products, it’s generally safe if you choose non-irritating, hydrating components. Yet, sticking primarily to the gel can keep your routine simple and less likely to cause adverse reactions. When exploring such DIY mixtures, it’s often better to start simple and seek professional skincare advice if you’re unsure. If the redness persists or your skin doesn’t improve, consulting a dermatologist might be a prudent step to ensure bespoke advice tailored to your skin’s specific needs.
