home remedies for acne marks - #16307

Amara

I am in my early 20s and had a really bad breakout a few months ago, which left me with some stubborn acne marks on my cheeks. I've tried various treatments but nothing seems to work! I heard about home remedies for acne marks but honestly, I'm a bit skeptical. Like, I've tried lemon juice and honey, but it just made my skin feel sticky and burning sometimes. I've also read about using aloe vera, which I thought was pretty nice, but still, my marks seem to be lingering. A friend told me to mix turmeric and yogurt, but I’m worried about any irritation since my skin is sooo sensitive. I’ve also seen people rave about using green tea, but am not really sure how to apply it best, like should I make a mask out of it or just use it as a wash? Would home remedies for acne marks be actually effective, or am I wasting my time? Should I be patient or is it a total myth that these natural methods can actually lighten them up? I just really need some suggestions that won't mess with my skin further! Thanks in advance!

Doctors’ responses

When it comes to treating acne marks, home remedies can offer some help, but they aren’t always a guaranteed solution and can take time. Many natural ingredients have anti-inflammatory or soothing properties that are beneficial, but they don’t necessarily work for everyone. It’s important to be cautious, especially with sensitive skin. Aloe vera is generally a safe option, as it’s soothing and moisturizing, which might help with irritation and slight hyperpigmentation over time. You can use the pure gel directly from the plant if possible, applying it once or twice daily. However, for lemon juice, the risk of irritation and sun sensitivity is high due to its acidic nature, so it’s best avoided for sensitive skin types. Similarly, turmeric mixed with yogurt can have a lightening effect, yet patch testing is critical to ensure no adverse reactions. You can apply the mixture in a thin layer, leave it on for about 10-15 minutes, and rinse with warm water. As for green tea, it contains antioxidants which might help reduce inflammation. You could steep the tea, let it cool, and use a cotton pad to apply it to your skin. It’s better as a toner rather than a mask for reducing the acne marks. Regardless of the remedy, there needs to be consistency, and progress may take several weeks or even months. Nonetheless, if the marks persist, or are causing distress, seeing a dermatologist would be prudent. There are many treatments like chemical peels or microdermabrasion that are more effective in reducing acne marks. It’s also crucial to wear sunscreen daily, as UV exposure can darken scars and prolong their presence.
