people born with one kidney - #18961

Ayaan

I am kinda freaked out right now. I only found out recently that I'm one of those people born with one kidney, my doctor told me during a routine check-up after I mentioned some nagging back pain. I always thought the weird aches and fatigue were normal or maybe just from stress, but after some tests, they revealed that I’ve got just one kidney functioning. How does that even work? I mean, are there specific things I should be watchful for living with only one? I’ve heard some stories that people born with one kidney can lead totally normal lives, but others say there are risks involved. Like, do I need to change my diet or be careful about sports? I really love hiking and running, but will that put me at risk? Besides that, I’ve been feeling really tired a lot lately, like more than usual. Could that be connected to being someone born with one kidney or is that just me overthinking all of this? I guess I’m tryin to figure out what to expect moving forward. I’ve read about complications, but I don't even know what signs to look for or if I should be super concerned. Any advice from doctors who know about people born with one kidney would really help!

Discovering you’ve been living with one kidney can be an unexpected revelation, but many people are in a similar situation and lead normal, healthy lives. The key is understanding how to manage your health with this anatomical variation. The human body is quite adaptable, and a single kidney can efficiently handle the job usually done by two. However, regular health check-ups are crucial to ensure that the remaining kidney is functioning well. It’s also important to monitor for any signs that might suggest it’s not working as well as it should, like changes in urination, swelling in the legs or feet, or uncontrolled high blood pressure. Regular blood pressure monitoring and kidney function tests will be part of this routine.

Living with one kidney doesn’t necessarily mean drastic changes to your diet or lifestyle, but there are some considerations. Maintaining a balanced diet that’s low in salt, processed foods, and excessive protein can help reduce strain on the kidney. Staying hydrated is important, so aim to drink enough water throughout the day—around 2 to 2.5 liters is generally recommended unless advised otherwise by your healthcare provider.

Regarding exercise, activities like hiking and running are generally safe and beneficial for your overall health. It’s advisable, though, to avoid contact sports that might risk injury to your kidney. Consider using protective gear or modifying activities that carry a higher risk of trauma. Regarding the fatigue you’re experiencing, it’s not uncommon with kidney issues, but it could also be related to other factors like stress, diet, or sleep patterns. If fatigue persists or worsens, it would be wise to discuss this with your doctor. They might check for anemia or other conditions that could contribute to that tiredness.

Stay observant for any new symptoms or changes, and make sure to communicate them to your healthcare provider promptly. They can provide ongoing support and adjust any recommendations as needed. Having a proactive approach and seeking regular medical advice can significantly help you manage your health comfortably and confidently with one kidney.
