liver which side of body - #18977

Sia

I am really confused about this whole liver thing. I mean, I never really thought about which side of the body the liver is on until I started feeling this weird discomfort. For the last few weeks, I’ve had some nagging pain, and I thought it was just a side stitch from running, but then I remembered reading something about the liver and its location. It’s on the right side, right? But like, what if it’s not? I’ve been feeling this heaviness on that side, and sometimes there’s this dull ache, which makes me think maybe it’s connected to the liver? I went to my doc, and they did some blood tests but haven’t called me back yet, which is frustrating! I’m worried that I might be ignoring something serious. Can the liver actually cause pain on the right side? Or, like, am I just overthinking everything? I wish I knew more about why it’s so hard to pinpoint which side the liver is on. I'm trying to remember if I even ate anything weird lately... I’ve heard that some people have gallbladder issues too and it can feel similar? Anyway, just hoping someone can shed some light on which side of the body the liver is and what kind of symptoms to look out for. Thanks!

The liver is indeed located on the right side of the body, just beneath the ribcage. It’s one of the largest organs and plays a crucial role in various bodily functions like detoxifying substances, storing nutrients, and producing bile. If you’re feeling discomfort or pain on the right side, it’s reasonable to consider the liver as a possibility. However, several other issues can cause similar symptoms, including gallbladder problems or even musculoskeletal pain. Pain related to the liver can happen for various reasons, ranging from inflammation (hepatitis) to more serious conditions like liver damage or cirrhosis. Typically, liver pain is often associated with a dull, persistent ache, and sometimes, you may experience other symptoms like jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), fatigue, or loss of appetite. On the other hand, gallbladder pain, often from gallstones, can also occur in the upper right side of the abdomen and radiate to the right shoulder or back.

You’re right to follow up with your healthcare provider regarding the blood tests, as these could offer important clues about liver function or potential biliary issues. It’s useful to note if the pain is triggered or worsened by certain foods, such as greasy or rich foods, which could suggest gallbladder involvement. Keep track of any additional symptoms too, which can provide your doctor better context for diagnosis. Avoid overindulging in alcohol or fatty foods in the meantime, and ensure that you address any chronic or persistent symptoms with your healthcare provider. If you experience severe and sudden pain, fever, or jaundice, it would be wise to seek medical attention promptly, as these could be signs of a more urgent issue.
