where liver is situated - #19314

Khushi

I am feeling kinda confused and worried about something. I did some reading on anatomy recently, and I keep running into questions about where liver is situated in the body. Maybe it’s because I started feeling these weird pains, like on my right side, and I think that’s where liver is situated, but I’m not exactly sure if that’s the spot. I went to the doc, and they mentioned it could be gallbladder stuff too. But it just got me thinking more about where liver is situated. I’ve tried looking at diagrams online, but honestly, they just make it more complicated than it needs to be!!! Like, if I press on my abdomen, I'm not even clear if what I’m feeling is liver or something else. I also read that liver is located near the stomach, so does that mean it’s close to my ribs? What does it feel like if there’s an actual issue with it? I don't want to freak out for no reason, but if the liver is situated right there and it’s hurting, should I get checked again? Anyone else had similar pains in that area? Like, where liver is situated and all that stuff, I just want to have a better grasp on it.

Doctors' responses

The liver is indeed situated mostly in the right upper quadrant of your abdomen, up under your ribs, and extending slightly beyond to the midline towards the left. It’s the largest internal organ and because of its size and numerous functions, it can definitely be the source of various symptoms when something’s not quite right. You mentioned pain on the right side, which is consistent with where the liver is located, but it’s worth noting that other organs like the gallbladder or even your right kidney are in that region too and can also cause discomfort. When pressing on your abdomen, the liver itself isn’t usually palpable unless it’s enlarged or there’s significant underweight condition, so identifying it by touch isn’t typically feasible for most people without medical training. If you’re experiencing unexplained pain or tenderness, especially if it’s persistent or associated with other symptoms like jaundice, fatigue, or changes in appetite, it’s wise to see your healthcare provider. They might consider imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or CT scan, to get a better picture of what might be going on. Another important note is to keep an eye on lifestyle factors like your diet, alcohol intake, and medications, as they can influence liver health. Identifying the exact source of abdominal pain can be quite complex, as symptoms can overlap between various conditions, so a detailed evaluation by your doctor is necessary. If pain persists or worsens, or if any new symptoms arise, seeking medical attention promptly will help ensure that anything serious is addressed in a timely manner.
