is black tea good for diarrhea - #19340

Rhea

I am really confused about whether black tea is good for diarrhea. Last week, I started having these crazy stomach cramps and, well, let’s just say my bathroom trips became a bit too frequent. I wasn't sure what to eat and if I should drink anything at all. I’ve heard some people say that black tea can help, but then I also read somewhere that caffeine might make things worse? Ugh! I tried having a bit of black tea thinking it might settle my stomach, but then I worried if that was a mistake. The cramps went a little down, but I kept running to the loo. Is black tea good for diarrhea? Like, does it actually help or is it just an old wives’ tale? I drank it with just a bit of honey since I thought sugar might be a no-go, too. My friend said that staying hydrated is super important, and she mentioned maybe some clear broths, but I feel like I really need to know if black tea's okay or suggesting more belly issues. Plus, how often can I safely have it? Should I stick to just plain or maybe try a decaf version? I would love any advice. I’m kind of tired of feeling like this!

Doctors' responses

Black tea might offer some benefits for diarrhea due to its tannins, which can have an astringent effect that may help reduce intestinal inflammation. However, it can also contain caffeine, which has the potential to irritate the digestive tract and worsen diarrhea for some individuals. Drinking black tea in moderation, especially if you choose a decaffeinated option, could be reasonable. Since you’re having frequent bathroom trips and stomach cramps, it’s important to focus on staying hydrated first and foremost. Clear broths, oral rehydration solutions, and water are essential to replace lost fluids and electrolytes. If you’re inclinded to try black tea, it might be wise to do so in small amounts initially and without adding too much sugar, as excessive sugar could potentially worsen diarrhea by drawing more water into your intestines. You could try adding a bit of honey, as you mentioned, if it isn’t causing you any discomfort. In terms of frequency, limiting it to one or two cups a day and observing how your body responds could be a prudent approach. If symptoms persist or are accompanied by severe pain, fever, or signs of dehydration, it’s crucial to seek medical attention promptly as it could indicate an underlying issue that requires more specific treatment. Identifying and removing any dietary triggers and practicing gentle dietary adjustments might also be helpful in managing your symptoms. It’s always a good practice to consult a healthcare provider to tailor an approach suitable for your individual health needs, especially if diarrhea persists.
