burn scar removal cream - #19971

Shreya

I am really worried about this burn scar on my arm after I accidentally spilled boiling water. It's been almost a year and the scar hasn’t faded much. I've tried over-the-counter stuff, but honestly, nothing seems to work. Someone mentioned a burn scar removal cream, but there are just so many options out there, and I’m not sure what's legit. I read online that some creams can actually improve the tone and texture of the skin. But like, how do I know if a burn scar removal cream is the right choice? Do they actually work? I mean, I still get self-conscious wearing short sleeves and it’s super frustrating! My friend said she saw improvement with one specific burn scar removal cream but she also tried a couple others that did nothing. How long should it take to see results? I guess my concern is – is it worth the money or just another gimmick? My doctor hasn’t really given much guidance either. Any insights on this would be greatly appreciated!

Doctors' responses

When it comes to burn scar removal creams, the effectiveness can indeed vary widely based on the individual and the product. Products containing ingredients like silicone, hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, onion extract (like in Mederma), and certain peptides have shown potential in improving the appearance of scars over time. Silicone gel sheets or creams are often recommended as they can help flatten and soften the scar tissue, improving its appearance. It’s essential, however, to set realistic expectations. While these treatments can lead to some improvements in texture and color, they often work best on relatively new scars and the changes might be subtle. It’s also important to use them consistently as per the instructions, which sometimes means application for several months to notice any significant difference. Generally, any over-the-counter cream may take 3 to 6 months to show visible results, if any. Keep in mind that some people’s skin might respond better to these treatments than others. If your scarring is significant and particularly troubling, it may be worth considering speaking or revisiting more specialized options like laser therapy, dermabrasion, or corticosteroid injections with a dermatologist, especially if you’ve seen limited results from topical treatments. Each person’s skin heals and responds differently, so professional guidance can better tailor the approach to your particular needs. Be cautious of products that promise quick fixes or miraculous results, as they’re often not grounded in evidence-based medicine. Always patch-test a new product to avoid allergic reactions. Since you’ve already tried several over-the-counter options without much luck, and specialist intervention may be the next logical step, your healthcare provider or dermatologist can provide a more comprehensive evaluation and recommend the most appropriate treatment options for your case.
