White spots on the face can be due to dry skin, sun exposure, or conditions like pityriasis alba or fungal infections. Persistent dandruff despite regular oiling and shampooing may need medicated treatment, as oiling can sometimes worsen scalp flaking. It’s best to consult a dermatologist to identify the exact cause and get the right treatment for both issues.

White spots on the face can be caused by a few different conditions, but a common one is pityriasis versicolor, a fungal infection that leads to lighter, discolored patches. This is often linked with oily skin or areas with more fungal growth, like the scalp when affected by dandruff. Dandruff itself is typically caused by a condition called seborrheic dermatitis, which can result in flaking and sometimes even contribute to skin discoloration when inflammation spreads. To address the white spots, you might consider an anti-fungal cream or shampoo containing selenium sulfide or ketoconazole. These can often be applied directly to the spots or used as a cleanser a few times a week. As for the dandruff, using a medicated shampoo containing zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, or ketoconazole can be effective. These ingredients help in reducing yeast presence on your scalp, thereby reducing dandruff. When using these shampoos, allowing them to sit on the scalp for 3-5 minutes before rinsing can enhance their effectiveness.
Consistency is key; it often takes several weeks of regular use to see marked improvement. If your symptoms don’t improve within a month or seem to worsen, a consultation with a dermatologist might be warranted to rule out other conditions like vitiligo or psoriasis. Meanwhile, keep in mind lifestyle factors—stress, diet, and hygiene practices—all can play a role in skin and scalp health. Also, avoid applying heavy oils directly to the scalp as this might exacerbate the dandruff. Instead, using light, water-based moisturizers on the skin itself can help if dryness is an issue. Balancing your daily skincare routine and paying attention to how your skin responds to products can often provide more insights into what works for your particular condition.
