what does hair serum do

Hriday

I am really confused about this whole hair serum thing. I’ve been hearing my friends talk about it, and they keep going on about how great it is. But, honestly, what does hair serum do? I've tried a couple of different products because I’ve been dealing with some serious frizz and breakage lately. My hair feels dry and lifeless, and I just want to know if this stuff even works or if it's just another gimmick. I mean, I bought this fancy one with all these oils and nutrients, but after using it for a week I kinda feel like... did it even do anything? I read online that what does hair serum do might depend on the type of serum we use, but like, how do I know which one is right? Some say it adds shine, others say it helps with heat protection. I’m just not sure if it’s worth the price tag! Also, should I be using it on dry or damp hair? Does it actually give me something more than just nice packaging? Like, I really want to rescue my hair, but how do I know if what does hair serum do is legit?

Doctors' responses

Hair serum can indeed seem like a confusing product given the range of formulations and potential benefits it’s marketed for. Essentially, hair serum is designed to enhance the sheen, smoothness, and manageability of hair. It often contains silicones, oils, and nutrients that create a protective layer around the hair shaft. This can help to control frizz, reduce tangling, and add shine by smoothing out the cuticle. For someone dealing with frizz and breakage, a serum can help to temporarily mitigate these concerns by coating the hair and providing a smoother appearance. In terms of application, using hair serum on damp hair is recommended, as it can seal in moisture from washing and add an additional protective barrier before styling. However, applying a small amount on dry hair can also help manage flyaways and give added polish.

It’s important to choose the right serum based on your hair’s specific needs. For example, if your primary concern is frizz control, look for serums with silicone which can help form a seal over your hair, locking out humidity. On the other hand, if damage and breakage are the main issues, opt for serums that contain nutrients or reparative oils like argan or jojoba oil, which can provide nourishment and some repair benefits. You may not see dramatic changes immediately, especially with damage-related concerns, but consistency over time can improve hair’s appearance. Remember, though, serums are not a cure-all for hair health issues. They mainly provide surface-level cosmetic improvements and any serious hair health issues should be addressed with a comprehensive approach including a look at your overall hair care routine, diet, and lifestyle factors. Always patch-test any new product to ensure there’s no adverse skin reaction, and consider consulting a dermatologist or trichologist if hair health doesn’t improve with over-the-counter options.
