how to use apple cider vinegar for skin - #22657

Mira

I am kinda freaking out about my skin lately. I’ve been dealing with this annoying acne that just won’t go away and it’s driving me nuts. My friend mentioned that I should look into how to use apple cider vinegar for skin problems, and I thought I'd give it a shot. I read that it can help with breakout and even skin tone, but I'm not sure how to actually use it! Like, do I need to dilute it with water or put it directly on my face? And how often is it safe to use? I tried putting it on a cotton ball once but it stung a bit, so I backed off. I’ve heard it could help clear up the blemishes and even help with scarring too, but then I worry about whether I'm making it worse or just wasting my time. Plus, I don't wanna smell like pickles all day, lol! If anyone has personal experience with how to use apple cider vinegar for skin or even if it worked for them, that would be sooo helpful. Do you guys have tips on avoiding any side effects? Like, I’ve also got sensitive skin, so I’m just unsure what's safe. Thanks in advance!

Doctors' responses

When considering apple cider vinegar for acne, it’s important to bear in mind that while some individuals report positive outcomes, scientific evidence supporting its efficacy is limited, and its use should be approached cautiously, particularly with sensitive skin. Firstly, always dilute apple cider vinegar before applying it to your face—a common starting ratio is one part vinegar to four parts water. Test this mixture on a small patch of skin (like your inner arm) before applying it to your face to ensure you don’t experience any adverse reactions. If it’s too harsh, increase the ratio of water. Use a clean cotton ball to apply the diluted solution to the affected areas, and leave it on for about 5-15 minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water. Start by applying it once a day, gauging your skin’s response; if you notice improvement without irritation, you might try it up to twice a day, but always be watchful for signs of overuse, like excessive dryness or irritation. To mitigate the smell, some find applying it in the evening more manageable. Avoid direct sun exposure immediately after application as it can make your skin more sensitive to UV rays. Using a fragrance-free moisturizer afterward can help maintain moisture balance, especially with sensitive skin. If you notice persistent redness or irritation, discontinue use and consult with a dermatologist. For comprehensive acne treatment, a combination of lifestyle changes (such as dietary adjustments, good skincare habits) and medical treatment, when necessary, often proves most effective. If acne is severe or persistent, seeking professional advice for personalized treatment is advisable, as other underlining issues may need addressing.
