I am really curious about what are the benefits of drinking hot water because I've been hearing about it everywhere lately. Like, my friend was telling me how she swears by it for everything from digestion to clear skin! I tried drinking hot water instead of cold for a week, and I dunno, I feel like maybe my stomach is a little less bloated? But it's hard to tell. I also read somewhere that it can help with blood circulation and even detoxifying the body? Is it really true that what are the benefits of drinking hot water are so significant? I even did this search, and some sites said it can also help with nasal congestion, which like, yes! 'Cause I've been a bit sneezy. But then I wonder, should I be drinking it first thing in the morning or like throughout the day? And what if I'm not a fan of hot drinks? I mean, is there a right temp I should be aiming for? All these questions are swirling around. Would love any thoughts on what are the benefits of drinking hot water, especially compared to, like, regular water or cold water. Am I missing something important?

Hot water can aid digestion by soothing the digestive tract and breaking down food more effectively. The idea is that warmth dilates blood vessels in the digestive tract, promoting better circulation and aiding peristalsis, which is the movement of food through the gut. For some people, this can mean reduced bloating or smoother digestion. Regarding nasal congestion, steam from hot water can help open nasal passages if inhaled, and drinking warm fluids may keep you hydrated, which supports mucus thinning. However, inhalation of actual steam might be more effective for congestion than just drinking the water. Claims that hot water detoxifies the body are largely exaggerations; your liver and kidneys handle detoxification quite well on their own regardless of water temperature. As for circulation, warm fluids can transiently improve peripheral circulation by dilating blood vessels, but again, it’s a subtle effect. Whether you drink it first thing in the morning or throughout the day is up to you, although drinking hot water too close to meals may lead to discomfort for some people. If you’re not fond of hot drinks, drinking lukewarm water still provides the hydration benefits without overly stressing your system. Aim for a temperature that’s comfortably warm, similar to what you’d use for a cup of tea—hot enough to be comforting but not scalding.
