Hello

Metformin itself usually doesn’t cause lasting breathing problems once stopped, so 3 weeks is already longer than expected for simple drug-related side effects to settle. Most people would feel normal within a few days to 1–2 weeks after stopping.

However, the symptom “can’t breathe fully” needs attention. Rarely, metformin can be linked to Lactic Acidosis, but that typically causes severe illness (rapid breathing, weakness, vomiting) and abnormal blood tests—so if your tests are normal, that’s less likely.

More common possibilities are anxiety-related breathing pattern, gastritis/acid reflux causing chest discomfort, or an unrelated lung/heart issue.

You should not ignore this since it’s persisting—get a clinical check (oxygen levels, chest exam, possibly ECG or chest X-ray). The good part is that this is usually reversible, and most people do recover fully once the actual cause is identified and treated.

If you develop worsening breathlessness, chest pain, dizziness, or fainting, go to emergency care immediately.

Using metformin without a prescription is not advisable, as it can cause unwanted side effects and may not be suitable for everyone. If you’re experiencing weakness and generally feeling unwell, it’s essential to consider that metformin can occasionally cause gastrointestinal disturbances, vitamin B12 deficiency, or lactic acidosis, though the latter is rare. Since your blood tests are normal, the weakness might be due to other factors. First, it would be wise to stop metformin if it was not prescribed by a healthcare provider, as unauthorized use might expose you to unnecessary risks. Ensure your diet is balanced and includes adequate nutrients, especially vitamin B12, which plays a role in energy levels. If you’re vegetarian, this is even more critical. Rehydrating with fluids, maintaining a regular sleep schedule, and moderate exercise can also help recover general vitality. Given your symptoms, a follow-up with your healthcare provider is recommended to discuss the details of your symptoms and review any additional necessary tests or treatment that might be needed based on your health status. If the weakness persists or is severe, or if you experience symptoms like difficulty breathing or severe abdominal pain, seek medical attention promptly as these may indicate serious conditions that need immediate intervention. While restoring to your previous baseline health should be achievable, ensuring a thorough medical evaluation will be the safest route to defining and confirming a comprehensive recovery plan.
